C-section and breast feeding- a couple of ?'s

I'm scheduled for my first c-section July 29th (little nervous, little disappointed) and I want to breastfeed but was wondering how soon after the surgery do they give you the baby? Which position was most comfortable? Also, should I bring My Brest Friend pillow to the hospital also? Thanks!

I was out of it till 3 hours later and then they brought the baby in.. definately bring your breastfriend (boppy pillow) with you (it helps with pressure on your incision) The nurses will help you with everything, if they don't then demand that they do or get you a lc... congrats and good luck..

Re: C-section and breast feeding- a couple of ?'s

I nursed DS in recovery (as soon as they were done sewing me up) It was about a half hour after he was born. For the first session, the nurses held him up to my breast because I was too out of it from the meds, to hold him myself. I nursed him in the cross cradle hold while in the hospital. It just felt more natural to me than the football hold (usually recommended for Csection). I would definitely bring your BFing pillow. I had my boppy there and got a lot of use out of it!

As soon as I was brought into recovery they gave me DS to nurse. The nurse set me up in the football hold saying it would be easier on the incision - that was on the one and oly time I did the football hold, it was just awkward for me.

I nursed him in the typical across the front position after that and it was not uncomfortable for me. I would definitely bring your nursing pillow - they help a lot!

They didn't take her away until later... The cleaned her up while I was being sewn up and then they put her inbetween my thighs as the wheeled me into recover, I had her in recovery and then I breastfed her there, then I went to my room and I got her again after she was all cleaned up!

This was at Winthrop, I had the best experience there!

They brought DS in the recovery room 1 hour later. I was allowed to BF at this time but I waited till I was transfered to my room which was another hour later. The nurse helped me there. She showed me the football hold so DS isn't laying across my incision. And I just used the hospital pillows.

Re: C-section and breast feeding- a couple of ?'s

My husband brought my children into the recovery room both times to try to latch right away. So I had them within 15-30 minutes after I gave birth. During that time their doctors made sure they were ok and I was stitched up.

I put a ton of pillows between my lap and the baby to support the baby and my body. Good luck.

DS was given to me right away! If I had chosen to BF, i could have immediately, as soon as we got to recovery!

I was holding the baby (albeit awkwardly) while they were stitching me up, we did skin to skin all during recovery and she was with me the whole time I was in hospital. She latched on in recover and was breastfeeding like a champ the whole time!

I actually found the boppy to be more annoying than helpful, but thats just me. Everyone else seems to love theirs.

Re: C-section and breast feeding- a couple of ?'s

I told the nurses before the surgery and after the surgery that I wanted to BF right after he was born. It was very important to me. Once transfered to the recovery, I told them again. I was shaking a lot but I insisted. I BFd DS within 15-20 minutes I was transfered to the recovery (hooked up, set up, etc..). Then they took DS to be cleaned up.

I did not have the boppy pillow in the recovery but I did have it with me while in the hospital.

I was shaking for over an hour after the c, so I did not BF right away. I got to my room about 3 hours after my c and the nurses brought her to me then. I BFed her at that time, in the football hold. I remember having NO IDEA what I was doing!

A couple of you said that you were shaking after the C- is this a typical reaction?

Re: C-section and breast feeding- a couple of ?'s

yes shaking is common and so is itching... side effect of the drugs. it goes away after a few hours it's not really that bad so don't get nervous! bring nightgowns because you're not going to want pants around your stomach. bring flip flops and not socks or those little slippers because you're going to be swollen that they won't fit!

i didn't like the boppy or breast friend because i was so swollen it didn't fit around me... it was more uncomfortable than helpful. i used my snoogle pillow and still do! don't be nervous, i actually am glad that i had a csection, a shorter harder recovery but less time than my friends who have birth vaginally! and you're in and out with your baby within 45mins!
