Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
After your C-section, how soon did you start breast feeding? And did you tell the hospital staff that you did not want your DC bottle fed? And I read that you are not suppose to give the baby a pacifier....of those who BF, do you give your DC a paci?
TIA

Re: Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
Not sure if you want my answer since I had a c-section after 4 hours of pushing... Immediately after the c-section I passed out from being awake and in labor for so long (44 hours) and from the medications. The nurses went to my DH while I was passed out and said the baby's blood sugar was low and that he should have some formula - I did not want him to have any formula and let the staff know- but I think DH was scared when they said his sugar was low so told them to feed the baby a bottle. Later that night when I was back with it, I started breastfeeding and everything was fine! The baby latched on perfectly and that one bottle of formula had no negative effect on him breastfeeding. I waited til about 4 weeks before trying to give him a pacifier, but he would not take it. Still at 7 months, no pacifier. Landon sucks his thumb to soothe himself.

I BF as soon as they let me which was with in a few hours of them being born. They never had a bottle and I didn't give either of them a paci.

Re: Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
For both kids I BF as soon as they were allowed to leave the nursery, which I think was 4 hours after they were born. Both my kids took a paci and had no nipple confusion. Although Alexander has turned out to prefer his thumb over a paci.

Re: Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
I had an emergency c-section and couldn't BF Abby right away (she was in the NICU) but I was pumping as soon as I could and she got the colostrum. She got SOME formula because I hadn't enough of my own milk to give her yet. By the time she left the hospital after a week, she had been transitioned back to the breast - it wasn't easy, but we did it.
Mind you, NONE of this was what I thought it would be like. I knew that I might have needed a c-section and was prepared for it as soon as I went into labor. I also told them no pacifiers and no formula. We did not have a choice. Abby needed to eat.

Re: Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
I didn't see my DC for HOURS after I had him. but I allowed them to give him bottles for 2 days, then tried to nurse him. yeah right! He was not having it and wanted his bottle back. I was never able to get him to latch so I pumped for 3.5 long tiring months! Next time, my baby will have no bottle!! no matter how long I don't see him/ her, and I will really try to BF . DS also had a paci when he had his circ, the nurses had given it to him

Re: Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
DS had hypoglycemia and had to be fed right away. As it turned out, he also had trouble nippling, so he got sugar water through an IV. They wanted to give him a paci to get him to suck. Are you still planning an early delivery? I have no problem with the fact that they gave him a bottle or pacifier under the circumstances. I started pumping within about a day and I did get a decent milk supply. He latched on only a few times but I became very frustrated with those efforts. Pumping was rather easy for me, though. This was just my experience.

Re: Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
I was not a scheduled c-section. I was in natural labor for 36+ hours and pushed for 3. Wound up with a c-section. 3:25am he was born and our first nursing session was at 7:00am when I finally got in a room.
I had a sign that we taped to his bassinet which said "Breast is best, no bottles and no paci's please".
Someone in the nursery took it down on about day 3 And everytime there after they brought him to me a binky was in there with him. Which I promptly kept throwing out.
I tried to introduce a binky to Ryan at 8 weeks after BFing was working for us and I was ready to stick with it. Ryan never took to it. I tried a few times until 5 months then became grateful he didn't pick up a habit I'd later be forced to break anyway.

Re: Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
WHen I did my pre surgical testing they asked about how I wanted the baby fed. I said BM only but changed my mind while in the hospital. they asked every time they were int eh room how I wanted the baby fed which was good!
I BF probably 1.5 hours after DS was born. Once I was out of recovery.

Re: Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
After your C-section, how soon did you start breast feeding?
As soon as I was able - in the recovery room.
And did you tell the hospital staff that you did not want your DC bottle fed?
Yes but one night I know they did give her a bottle.....she would get so worked up at night that by the time they brought her to my room she wasn't able to latch. So I would recommend having her sleep in your room with you. Also when you want to BF, use the call button and just ask for someone to hand you your baby -- I would ask for the nurse and that would take much longer, so again -- she'd get so worked up she couldn't latch. Anyone on staff can hand you your baby.
And I read that you are not suppose to give the baby a pacifier....of those who BF, do you give your DC a paci?
I didn't give DD the paci for a while -- I think she was at least a week old before we used one. She didn't have one in the hospital.
So excited for you Judy!!
PS - Bring the boppy with you!! You will need it after a c/s.

Thank you for all of your responses! If all goes well tomorrow with the amnio, we are scheduled for the c-section on Tuesday!

Re: Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
I wasn't allowed to BF in recovery because they couldn't put me in the maternity recovery room (it was too full, massive amount of C/S that day) so I wasn't allowed to have DD with me in the main recovery. But as soon as I got to my room, an hour later, I was allowed to BF. I didn't allow any bottles until DD got the hang of nursing.

Re: Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
I would have been allowed to BF in recovery but they thought DD had a condition that would require surgery at birth so i had to wait until they did testing to r/o the condition. I wasn't a scheduled section though I was in labor before having to have the section.

Re: Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
Both of my sons were given bottles before I was able to offer the breast. With DS1, I was on too much medication (I had pre-eclampsia) and was not able to BF for about 36 hours. As soon as I offered the breast, he latched on right away. I had the nursery give bottles at night so I could sleep a bit since I was recovering from major surgery! Once I came home, I also had our nurse (we had her for 2 weeks), give him a bottle at night so I could sleep a bit. He was given a paci in the hospital but never took one after, as much as I tried! He used me as a paci for the most part I nursed DS for 9 months when he self weaned...
DS2 was born 6 weeks early and was in the NICU. He was given formula primarily so they could monitor how much he was eating. I pumped as much as I could so he could get my colostrum as well. As soon as I got the OK (feeding tubes and all), I nursed him. He still had to have the bottles since he needed the calories but at least he was also getting used to sucking from a breast. In the NICU, they use pacifiers on all babies. It helps to develop the sucking reflex on preemies. We also had the nurse give him bottles at night so I could sleep a little. Since she left, I have given him maybe 10 bottles? He does take a paci and is now trying to suck his thumb as well. It is so cute when he sucks his little thumb

I had a sign that said no bottles, and I checked her chart where they record feedings and there were numerous recordings of her being fed formula

Re: Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
I had a c-section and wanted to breast feed. The nurses started to bottle feed him all the time and when I tried to breast feed he would latch on for 2 or 3 minutes and that would be the end of that. I tried for over two weeks but the bottlefeeding got in the way. Also try to keep him in the room with you at night.....even though it'll be hard to give up your rest if you really want to breast feed my recommendation is that you breast feed exclusively before DC becomes used to the bottle. Feel free to bother the nurses to come and get the baby for you at night since you may not be able to get out of bed very easily the first couple of nights. I was too worried about being a pain to do that and I would give the baby to the nursery in the evening and wouldn't see the baby until the next morning after I had breakfast and they brought him in to me. If you want to breastfeed don;t feel bad about having the nurses help you.
Hope this helps!

Re: Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
Bravo for you wanting to BF!!!! I am the queen of expecting everything to go my way and not expecting anything else! After delivery, my DS went to the NICU. I had all the plans for the nurses: no bottles, no pacifiers. Well, things change.
I attempted to BF about 6 hours after he was born and it didn't work. About 13 hours after he was born, I got to BF for the first time. But I can tell you I was pi$$ed at first that I didn't get to BF. Then I went into the NICU and he had a pacifier in his mouth. I thought I was going to choke someone.
Long story short : After the first day he was BF like a champ. The first 24 hours he didn't really do it and I thought the world was coming to an end. (And since my DS was 11 1/2 pounds, he needed to eat A LOT) I EBF for 6 months and BF for one year. So, bottles, pacifiers and all in his first few days, it worked out!!
Good luck!!!!!!!!
Edited to add: DS tried a pacifier in his first few months. He never took to the pacifier, even though he had one in his mouth OFTEN in the hospital. At home, not so much.

Re: Scheduled C-Section Moms and Breast feeding
I wasn't a scheduled c-section, but I ended up with one after a failed induction. The staff knew I wanted to EBF. I tried to BF in the recovery room, but felt really nauseous as I tried to get up. I didn't BF until several hours later. I hadn't planned on using a pacifier, but DS ended up in the NICU 2 days after he was born and the NICU uses pacifiers (Soothie brand). DS really likes the Soothie so we still use it.
