C-Section and breastfeeding
For those that had a c-section and breastfed, how does that work? I have read that after the birth, the Mom should try to feed the baby w/in one hour, but with a c-section I know there is recovery time that is needed. So how does this work?

Re: C-Section and breastfeeding
I didn't have a c-section, but I did have a 4th degree tear that need to be repaired immediately. Plus my daughter was rushed to the NICU because I ran a fever during labor. So, I didn't get to feed her within the first hour -- probably not for closer the three hours. We had no problem starting a few hours later. The nursing after birth is for comfort, not nutrients -- they are coming out well fed from the umbilical cord!

Re: C-Section and breastfeeding
I had a c-section and did not have to stay in recovery at all. They stitched me up, cleaned me up and wheeled me back to our room. I know I was definitely breastfeeding within an hour of delivery. But, if you can't bf in that magical hour you and DC will be fine. Like the PP said, they nurse for comfort at this point, not nutrition quite yet. It's just bonding time. Good luck and congrats!

Re: C-Section and breastfeeding
I had a c-section and wasn't able to see Julia till the next day, and the nurses had no idea that I was BF so they were giving her formula. My LC got so angry that no one asked me if I was BF, when I finally did start it was like the 3rd day in the hospital, thankfully Julia had no problems latching on and drinking.
I would let you nurses know ASAP that you are BF, and would like the baby in your room once you are out of the recovery room.

Re: C-Section and breastfeeding
I started about an hour after I had her. You're so doped up that I really didn't feel any pain until 6 or so hours after the surgery. Even then the pain meds really managed any pain I was having. I went right into bfing-not the same as popping the baby on the boob immediately after birth, but pretty close.

Re: C-Section and breastfeeding
I bf'd my first, i had a vicious 4th degree epiosotomy with tearing, so i didn't get to feed her til 3-4 hours after her birth-she didn't eat anything til then. THe nurse said babies aren't usually hungry right away and DD wasn't, she didn't start wanting anything til then anyways.
With my 2nd i had a c section and if i was to bf'd i would have done it as soon as I felt well enough to do it. I ate solid food within an hour of my c section.

Re: C-Section and breastfeeding
I asked to BF DS right after I was transfered to recovery. I wanted to BF him right away. I had read that it was best to BF within the 1st 2 hours. It is supposed to help babies latch on. He latched on right away. I only BF him for a few minutes.
1/ He was born and quickly cleaned up in the OR. 2/ I was stiched/stappled while he was being checked/weighted, etc... 3/ I went to recovery 4/ BF DS for a few minutes 5/ DS went to nursery to be cleaned more and checked again. 6/ I got sick and stayed in recovery for 7 hours. 7/ I BF DS when I went finally to my room 8/ I wrote on all documents and told EVERYONE he was to be BF only.

Re: C-Section and breastfeeding
I was in recovery with Jordana and tried within that hour. She wasn't interested. They took her from me and I got her back about 2 hours later when I was in my room and we tried again.
I ended up nursing for a year without any problems. Don't worry about it. It will all work out

Re: C-Section and breastfeeding
I didn't get to BF until I was out of recovery and DS was cleaned up. I think it was probably about 3 hours. The first time he latched, he did fine, but we ended up having some problems after that. Luckily the LC in the hospital was wonderful and the latch was fixed before I left. We've not been BFing for 6 months and going strong.

Re: C-Section and breastfeeding
I had a c-section and the baby was on my boob within 30 minutes. I explained to the nurses how important this was to me and that I really needed it to happen. They were great, they brought me the baby and a LC in recovery.
The biggest obstacle I think is the actual pulling out your boob. Its really up to you to do it. Once they hand you that baby, just do it...it doesn't matter who is around or where they have to take the baby.

So did I, but I wasn't able to Bf her for a few hours. I had some complications at the end of the c-section and lost alot of blood so I was kinda out of it. But we had no problems a few hours later when I felt up to it.

Re: C-Section and breastfeeding
DD was born at 1:09am and I was in recovery for awhile b/c I was having a difficult time. They brought me DD around 4:30am and she wasn't interested in eating-we tried again around 8am and she latched on like a champ and we haven't had any problems since. She has never received formula.

Re: C-Section and breastfeeding
i had a c-section and they gave me to her to breastfeed within an hour i think. I was actually shaking so much, that i freaked out and didn't want to try holding her. i didn't breastfeed her until the next morning.
