Cable or Verizon?
We're tossed at who to go w/...our neighborhood does not have FIOS yet so it would just be the 3 services (high speed internet); phone & cable. Who do you have & pros/cons of each?
If you go w/ cable can you still keep your same phone number
Thx.

Re: Cable or Verizon?
We're technofiles so we're going with Verizon because of the speed. With cable, you're sharing your network with your neighbors. With Fios, you've got a straight run to the central office.
We had a problem with someone in our area using their computer as a web server and our internet service would slow to a crawl or go out completely every night around 8pm.
That alone makes us want to try something new. The price doesn't seem to be that much less, just a few bucks. But we will have a DVR that we've never had before. And I've also been told that the picture on the tv is a much better quality.

We don't have FIOS in our area, but we like Cablevision and we haven't had any issues with our cable, phone or internet. We even have wireless and it all works perfectly.

Re: Cable or Verizon?
Negatives of switching over to Verizon.
You will not have MSNBC or News Channel 12. I love Channel 12.
Their customer service is the worst.
I was going to switch over to FIOS, and when I called to change my appointment, I was on hold for 45 minutes, and I was redirected from 5 different customer service agents, until I finally got to the one that was going to help me. When she picked up, she said when would you like to change your installation to and I said, never mind, I want to cancel it.
Everytime I call Cable, I am on hold around 2 minutes before someone picks up and helps me right away.
FIOS is faster and the tv will look better, but only if you have HDTV.....I dont think there is any difference with a regualr tv......

Re: Cable or Verizon?
we have Verizon for Phones (landline, none cable) and Cablevision for Internet/TV
I'm happy we have Verizon for landline. We actually did loose power this past Friday and it was nice having the phone still working.

We have cable and I wouldn't switch anytime soon. My best friends brother is a Cable tech and has told me some horror stories that FIOS people told him when he had to go fix something that VZ messed up.

Re: Cable or Verizon?
I was up in the air about switching myself and decided to stay with Cable for now. The service at Verizon has not been great when I was trying to arrange an appointment with them, I got transferred to 5 different departments and was on the phone for 1/2 hour before I spoke to a live person. Was told I can not get someone to the house for another 2 weeks and they do not have weekends open, I was also told by the Rep that it can take up to 6-hours to install.
Couple of people I have spoke to also said to wait since FIOS is not up to par yet with Cable, but maybe in the next year or so they will be better.

Re: Cable or Verizon?
We went with Cablevision, mainly because we both had to take a fair amount of time off work after we moved for this and that, so we didn't want to take off another day for FIOS to be set up (I hear it takes around 6 hours).
I have heard the speed of FIOS is superior to cable, and we planned to hook this up shortly after we moved. But we had an absolutely HORRIBLE time with our Verizon phone service around the time we moved. Their customer services really stinks, no one knows which end is up, and that really soured us on FIOS. So now, I'm not so sure we'll switch.
Cablevision customer service has been much easier to reach, more helpful, and easier to deal with.

I also have heard that FIOS wasn't doing as well as expected so now when they get someone that wants to sign up they cut the original Cable line.
Then if/when you want to switch back it's a long install for cable and more inconvenient with possibly additional installation charges.

You can order FIOS through Verizon's web site. Much faster.

We have FIOS for internet and Cablevision for TV. When FIOS tv becomes available in our area, we will switch over.

Fios TV is not available in my area. We have Fios internet and phone and DirectTV for television. Verizon has a package with DirectTv which saves money. We love it!

Re: Cable or Verizon?
So far Im sticking with Cable although I really do hate them...
A. I dont want to change my phone# in order to switch to FIOS.
B. FIOS is more expensive for me. You need a box for each TV and we have 5 TVs.
C. They are really really vague when you ask them how much it is going to go up after the introductory period..I have yet to get a straight answer.

I hear this is true. So I was told it's better to by pass the FIOS customer service and have to setup handled by a FIOS rep that comes over and makes all the arrangements. And I also heard they offer the better deals. Yes it's a long install but you get all new fiber optic cables and regular cables throughout your house.

Re: Cable or Verizon?
I'm glad for the people who have had good service with Cablevision. Unfortunately, we have never had the same experience.
To get a service tech out to look at the last problem we had at the house was like pulling teeth. The "techs" (if you can call them that) were reading from a script and really had no idea how to troubleshoot a connection. I say they because I had to call three times with the same problem.
Because they could ping my modem from their office, they considered the problem solved. I said, "Do a continuous ping by adding a -t switch because the packets will drop after the first four pings. It only works 50% of the time and the timeout is way longer than it should be." The response I got... "Could you explain that to me again?" HELLO. If you're testing connectivity to my house, you think they would know WTeff they're talking about.
Every time we called Cablevision, we had 30-40 minute waits to get a resolution. I don't know if the calls get routed to different offices based on where you live, but IMO the customer service we have received has been terrible.
When we're talking about these things, specifics are key. Anyone can say one or the other is terrible but without all the details as to why, it doesn't really mean much.
I'm willing to give Verizon a try for a year to compare the service. The technology is newer and although the installation takes a long time, that's a risk I'm willing to take.

I got a straight answer - I was told whatever the current rate for new subscribers was, that's what you get. Same as Cablevision.
But you can sign up for a 2 year agreement and then you keep the introductory rate for 2 years.
