cable tv and house alarm systems?
Does anyone know why having a house alarm system would be affected by having cable tv?
my house alarm is through a private company which we inherited when we bought our house last year. this house is wired up like its fort knox with window sensors, motion and door sensors.
we have comcast digital phone and internet and direct tv. we have a dedicated verizon landline that the alarm system runs off of. we tried recently getting it converted to run with our digital phone to avoid paying verizon every month too. that didnt go well at all so we're back to running off a landline.
our alarm guy said when we switch to comcast tv (which we will next year) that the cable tv will interfere with the alarm system and we probably wont be able to use his company. (which is fine b/c i think he's a tool anyway).
any ideas on why this is?? i never knew cable tv would be an issue.

Do you mean getting phone service thru the cable company (aka VOIP?)
One of the major reasons we dont switch is that if the power goes out, your cable will go out, and that means that your phone is out, which means you have no alarm.

That's the issue.
We have the same problem, but they will still install it.

Re: cable tv and house alarm systems?
get a battery backup for your modem and phone..make sure your provide can make calls over voip...some make you purchase an adapter or just process codes/alerts online

Re: cable tv and house alarm systems?
the alarm guy did mention that if we switched to digital phone, then yes..there is the issue of blackouts and the modems/phones going out...that part i got.
but we couldn't even get the alarm system switched over to our digital line...we had 4 comcast guys here and they screwed it all up and we had to keep it on the landline.
but our alarm guy said the issue was also with having cable tv installed (as opposed to direct tv.) that his system would be affected if we had cable tv installed and we would not be able to use his services any longer .

Re: cable tv and house alarm systems?
My DH works with alarm systems for a living so I asked him for you. He only sees it as an issue if you have an old alarm panel that doesn't support a digital phone line. Your television service has nothing to do with it because the alarm system works off the modem or phone line.

I have a cellular transmitter with a battery backup on my alarm system.
A burgular can try to disconnect my power. He can cut my cable line so I don't have phone. Won't matter. The alarm system calls the central station using a built-in cellphone.
Works perfectly, and it beats the hell out of overpaying for Verizon landline just because I have an alarm system.
