Cakes for dd's birthday

I want to make a Minnie mouse cake but the hat is black. Every pic I have seen it using fondant and I have never used it before and really do want to. Any ideas on icing to use instead?

This is the cake I am eying. something very similar to this.

Anyone know what I can do?

If you want to use icing, you can buy black icing coloring. It's the only thing I've used to get a true black icing. They sell it at Michaels and other craft stores.

eta: this is the one I use. It's Wilton.

Can you use dark chocolate somehow instead of icing?

Hint: if you're going to use this, be sure to start with chocolate icing. It is easier to get from brown to black than white to black. I used white icing once and tried to get black icing...ended up using almost the whole jar of this, and all my friends had "discolored" bowel movements for a few days! (oops!) Chat Icon

The easiest way to achieve that look would be with black fondant....and you can buy it already black so you don't have to worry about using a TON of food coloring to get it to black.
