Cakes for dd's birthday
I want to make a Minnie mouse cake but the hat is black. Every pic I have seen it using fondant and I have never used it before and really do want to. Any ideas on icing to use instead?
This is the cake I am eying. something very similar to this.
Anyone know what I can do?

If you want to use icing, you can buy black icing coloring. It's the only thing I've used to get a true black icing. They sell it at Michaels and other craft stores.
eta: this is the one I use. It's Wilton.

Can you use dark chocolate somehow instead of icing?

Hint: if you're going to use this, be sure to start with chocolate icing. It is easier to get from brown to black than white to black. I used white icing once and tried to get black icing...ended up using almost the whole jar of this, and all my friends had "discolored" bowel movements for a few days! (oops!)

The easiest way to achieve that look would be with black fondant....and you can buy it already black so you don't have to worry about using a TON of food coloring to get it to black.
