Calling all fondue lovers!
I need your help. My DH's birthday is coming & when I asked him what he wants to do for his birthday he says "I don't know, anything with you." (He has mentioned fondue on numerous occassions)
We are really on a tight budget so I wanted to create a romantic dinner with fondue and candles and make a picnic in
I know cheese and chocolate....but I need more specifics.
Share what you have enjoyed.
Thank you so much for the help!!
Any other romantic ideas would be great too!!!!!

Re: Calling all fondue lovers!
Gruyere and Fontina cheese = YUM! Rub the inside of the pot with garlic...add your cheese and some white wine.
For dipping...soft pretzels (the kind you find in the frozen aisle) & APPLE are always a big hit.
For chocolate fondue...strawberries, pineapple, banana, marshmellows.
Another really good dessert - dip strawberries & peaches in sour cream and then brown sugar. *drool* The BEST dessert.

Re: Calling all fondue lovers!
chocolate - you can get other flavored chocolate as well...mint choc. etc...
marshmellows, berries, bananas, pound cake, rice krispy treats...etc.
for cheese- you can dip steak, seafood, chicken, veggies, breads-
Wine or champagne
Set it up like a real picnic-with a blanket and stuff... soft lighting, light music!
sounds like a nice evening in!

Oh be honest, it sounds totally weird! But it's delicious - something about the tart, sour cream and the maple-y sugar that really works.

Oddly, it does seem like it would work to me. I've had a similar dessert to that during the summer. But the person mixes the sour cream and sugar. The separat sounds better.

Re: Calling all fondue lovers!
Love this adaptation of a recipe from Martha Stewart:
Cheese Fondue -8 oz Gruyere cheese, cut into 1/4 inch cubes -4 oz Emmental cheese, cut into 1/4 inch cubes -2 T flour -1/8 tsp cayenne pepper -1/4 tsp freshly ground white pepper -1 1/3 cups medium-bodied white wine, such as Riesling ofr Sauvignon Blanc
Toss cheeses in a medium bowl with flour, cayenne pepper, and white pepper to coat, and set aside. Heat wine in a fondue pot over medium-low heat until it starts to bubble, about 5 minutes (I do this on the stovetop.)
Stir in cheese mixture, a little at a time.
Continue to cook, stirring, until cheese has melted, up to 20 minutes. The mixture should be smooth and almost bubbling. Transfer pot to its stand set over a burner. Serve immediately with bread, etc.
Dip -baguette cubes -We've done/luv sausage meatballs, Nathan's crinkle-cut french fries (these come frozen, heated in oven), brussels sprouts, mushrooms.

Re: Calling all fondue lovers!
this is a great help....thank you all!!
DH will be working that day, so when I get home I will set up the livingroom.
Now, if I don't have a fondue set, can I use a regular small pot? Any suggestions on what to use or what's the best fondue set to buy? I heard the candle burner ones are no good.

I just asked DH (he's a chef!). He says you can use a double boiler (water in bottom pot/cheese in top pot). I say, start with a medium flame, and if the wine doesn't start bubble, raise the flame.
I have a fondue set that is French. It looks like it has a cast iron coating inside. Not sure? Here it is:Image Attachment(s):

Yes, I was thinking a double boiler. I have 2 weeks, so I can search for a fondue set until then

Yeah, I need to find my local library first We've been here over a year and I still don't know where it is.
I've seen that electric one. I am in the process of looking for ones on line now

Absolutely! I bought it from Williams-Sonoma, it's called, "The Fondue Cookbook" by Hamlyn.
It has great fondue tips in there as well....like pairings of drinks for cheese fondues, vs. meat fondues vs. dessert. etc. I think it was $12.00.
