Re: Calling all high school teachers
Most of my classes would be considered on the "lecture" side. I don't, however speak the whole 45 minutes. I do a lot of question and answer with my students as I go on and treat my class more like a long story I'm telling. I do some cooperative learning. I do use powerpoints as well, but feel that the "lecture" works in my class the best. I am a social studies teacher btw.

Re: Calling all high school teachers
My classes vary.
The "usual" format is this: Do Now - 5 minutes Motivation (Activity, Video Clip, Reading) - 5 minutes Notes - 5-15 minutes Activity/Lab/Application - 15-25 minutes Closing - 5 minutes
There are many times, when there are no notes and just an activity.
In my department, we are also trying to do more project based learning. Currently, my students are working on a project where they are researching different alternative energies. They will then be presenting to the county's environmental committee and writing letters to the editor of the local paper to drum up community support for their ideas.

Re: Calling all high school teachers
I teach English.
5 minutes Do Now/Motivation 15 minutes Mini Lesson 20 minutes Activity/Group work 5 minutes Closing
It varies day to day but it usually follows this format.
Personally I prefer lecture however my school does not.

Re: Calling all high school teachers
I also teach English.
I have three basic plans:
1) Socratic seminars, which run for almost the whole period, with a five minute regroup at the end.
2) Combo whole-class teacher-directed instruction/cooperative learning task
3) Lecture (but VERY rarely).
HTH!
