Calling Charlotte & all NC people
I was in Charlotte for business, stayed in the South Park area. It is beautiful & the people are nice.
I did a little research, spoke to my peers from the NC area who are mostly earning close to what I earn here, then I searched around at real estate online to find the housing prices HALF of what the median is here & gas was only $3.07!!!
Plus you guys have GREAT dining now!
We ate at DelFriscos, Upstream & Maggianos.
 to all of you that made the move, it is beautiful & I think it really is a smart choice. Long Island is screwed unless we figure something out.

I know lots of people aren't cut out for leaving family & friends & starting someplace new, but now its crystal clear to me why it has become such a popular choice for young couples & families.

DH & I plan on moving there within the next few months. We love it there. We are just waiting for DH to get a job transfer and he will take his NY Salary. We don't own a home here and unfortunately we will have to wait a little while before we buy there, but I don't mind. We looked at tons of apartments and they are all gorgeous. We have 5 friends that already live there, so it won't be problem.

and not all industries have the same pay down there...DH is a teacher and would take a massive pay cut.
I would agree that it is beautiful down there and the houses are gorgeous!

Meaghan, kudos to you for your accomplishments but with all due respect you have become a true minority here. Unless something changes-be it property taxes, school taxes or the overall cost of living we will continue to see the "brain drain" in this area as young, educated people take their student loans & move away.
Those of us that choose to stay for whatever reason will have our choice of jobs here & be burdened by the cost of educating children of people that don't pay their share of taxes.

if im the minority, thats one thing - but the COL has always been high on LI, nothing new!! yet people still find a way to live here. if I can do it, anyone can do it. if you dont WANT to do it, and would rather live somewhere where the COL isnt as high, thats another thing.
half of NC is new yorkers anyway

We ay $2.91 for gas 
It's going to be close to 70 today
And you forgot people are so much more courteous here in NC!
My DH is doing much better $$ and benefits/hours/commuting wise than if we stayed in NY. I will take a pay cut in teaching though, but I never would have been able to stay home through this pregnancy if we were in NY. (Plus the dr experience has been better and all maternity hospital rooms are private)
And when we finally buy a house, it'll be a 100x better than one we could have afforded in NY.
So glad we made the move!

My DH makes the same money plus more in NC. I have met a lot of amazing LIF girls here already and I have only been here a month and a half. My neighbors are nice and do not slam the elevator door in my face, that is the most amazing thing I love about living here.
Kelly, did you have a chance to go to Southpark Mall? I have not gotten there yet but sunflower13 said I have to go.

The institute we attended was directly across the street & we ate in maggianos (yummy) which is in the mall. Many of the women we were with went shopping & loved it. It looks a whole lot cleaner & nicer than LI malls but we have Nordstroms & coach & whitehouse/blackmarket & stuff like that here.
We decided to go to the bars instead
The people are ultra friendly & there is something undeniable about southern charm!!!

I am glad you had a good time. When we first moved down here we lived in Southpark...what a great place.
We are such Cheesecake Factory people, so we never made it to the other places.
It's a real adjustment down here. Little by little, day by day, it gets more comfortable.
Luckily, we live so close to SC, I took lvlz's advice and always fill up down there. At times it's 15 cents cheaper then NC.
The location is what DH is in love with. 2 weeks ago we did daytrips to the ski mountain. Next week we will be in Myrtle Beach. NY is 10 hours, FL is 10 hours. You are so centralized.
It will feel more like home when we finally get the okay to buy a home. DH's job keeps us moving all around.
Emily...let me know when you want a Birkdale meetup!

I totally agree with you! I am a teacher and DH and I can't move out of state because of my salary. I also agree that COL has always been high on LI. My parents had to sell their house in the early 80s because of layoffs and high COL. It hasn't changed much. just backing up your points.

My cousin just moved to Charlotte. He and his wife were in Northern VA but sold that house to move to Charlotte. They are building their home.
He has moved around often with his job over the years but so far Charlotte is the place he likes best. He also says the cost to live there is CHEAP in comparison to Northern VA.
I have a few other family members that are looking to move to Charlotte as well as some close friends. They are all still researching and making weekend trips down.

Not all places pay poorly...some districts pay just as much or more than NYC...and yes there are plently that pay less.
But needless to say if we could have stayed on LI we would have...perhaps it was a blessing in disguise though, b/c when DH lost his job in July we were able to afford the house and everything else on my salary, whereas in LI we would have been in big trouble.
This place is finally feeling like home, we have FAB friends that are like family...and there is plently to do when its not snowing (and the whole place shuts down)

Mike called/emailed every county, and the pay they told him was lower than NYC. Of course he could have been given wrong information, which wouldnt surprise me.
and it only snows when I visit I bring it with me
