CAMERA HELP. Would love an SRL camera but might have to settle for a regular digital
my digital camera is from about 5 years ago...so I am in need of a new one, because I am missing great shots of my DD.
I don't know if we can swing an SRL, but I'd like info on them and what to look for.
Or a really good digital camera

We're in the same boat. I'm considering getting a Nikon D60, but it is hard to swallow the expense of it.
DPReview is a great site for looking at reviews of cameras of all kinds and has some very interesting articles.

Re: CAMERA HELP. Would love an SRL camera but might have to settle for a regular digital
I have the Nikon D40x and I have a sony cybershot.
I take my sony for everyday pictures but for special events I take the Nikon. It is worth every penny. The quality is so outstanding, there are some pictures I have that I would never have gotten with a regular camera...they are so priceless.
Now that i'm expecting i'm so thrilled I already got my slr (we bought it on our honeymoon) because if I didn't have one already i'd be buying one asap!!!

I am big fan of Nikon.
I think for a step up, I would look at the D40 or the D40X. It's pretty inexpensive. It's less expandable than some of the more expenive cameras because of the lenses it takes, but you will get great shots with a lot of ease and a manageable price tag.

great, I will check them out!
Thank you so much....I am so frustrated with fuzzy pictures and not being able to get good closeups. I am missing these memories, but having just bought a house I can't break the bank with this.

Maybe you can get one used? The D40X has been out for awhile, and a lot of photographers actually repalce digital cameras every 2-3 years to keep up woth technology, or otherwise people who started on the D40 may be moving up to a different model, so I'm sure you can find a good deal on something pre-owned.
And don't worry, The D40X is still perfectly up to date and will take great shots.
I love my D80

I would hold out for the DSLR. It is going to be the last camera you buy.
You can get a standard digital but why spend a few hundred if you can hold off until you get a few hundred more & buy the one you like.
I recommend the Nikon D40 or D40x.

The problem is the sensor/lens mount on the D40, it doesn't take standard lenses, so if you really, really got into photography you would want to upgrade eventually. But you could definitely get many many years out of the D40. By the time you want the additional features, the high end cameras will have much better technology for less.
I think the D40 or D40X is perfect for your needs though. I just wouldn't say it's necessarly the last camera you'll ever buy.

Re: CAMERA HELP. Would love an SRL camera but might have to settle for a regular digital
I have a D80. I wouldn't have it - but it kind of fell into my lap.
I am going to say something that is probably unpopular - but to heck with it.
Unless you are committed to really learning the ins and outs and the bells and whistles that go with the SLR - you are probably better off with a good quality point and shoot.
I have had this camera for over 2 months. I leave it almost ALWAYS on auto and I feel terrible because that's kind of a waste of a great piece of equipment. I do intend to learn more about photography and I am trying - but the learning curve is steep for a girl who previously used a regular digital (and before that a 110 or Polaroid!). And it is a pain to lug the thing around from pillar to post and constantly worry about losing this incredibly expensive piece of equipment. Tomorrow is my son's first day of school and I am probably going to leave the camera home and use our really old - not fully functioning Point and Shoot because it fits in my pocket. I don't want to be sitting there with this enormous camera clicking away like the paparazzi in my son's kindergarten class!
Having said that - if you are committed to learning to use the camera and it's features, I would call it an investment in a hobby that your truly enjoy and go for it. But if you are just going to leave it on auto - I'd suggest getting a really good quality point and shoot that will cost you less and take pictures that are good quality.
Good luck!

Re: CAMERA HELP. Would love an SRL camera but might have to settle for a regular digital
I think an SLR on Program mode will still take 100X better pictures than any point and shoot, I think compact digitals are a waste of money and never use it except if I'm going to out to a club or dinner where it would be unseemly to carry around my bag. However, I think at school, etc. DSLRs are becoming so popular that you won't look out of place, or if anything people will be like "wow, you're really cool"
I get so many people saying "oh wow, you must be a professional" or "wow, what a nice camera" from people who know nothing about it.
I don't think anyone looks upon it in a negative light.

I'm not worried about other people - at 40 years old I am waaaaaay beyond what other people think of me. I don't like the way *I* feel plopping down my big old bag and pulling out this camera as though I am some sort of professional that I absolutely am not!
I don't know the ins and outs of cameras - so I will take your word for it that SLR's take better pictures overall. BUT... I will say that from MY experience the difference between my pics with my Nikon D80 and the pics that my girlfriend takes with her Powershot are so nominal it is negligible. And my sister's pics on her high end Point and Shoot are BETTER than mine.
On the OTHER hand... the pics Barb takes with her D40 - compared to mine with my SLR or regular point and shoot - are wayyyy better. Maybe it's not the camera - but the person operating it?

If you don't have the money for a DSLR- you can do what I did- Ebay everything until you have enough!
ETA: DSLRs take photos much faster than point and shoots. 90% of the time I have it on auto mode and the photos are still better than my point and shoot digital.
