Camera Lens Recommedation pls

Calling all shutterbugs. I have been debating for months trying to decide what lens to buy for my Canon Rebel XT. For those of you who have this camera what lens do you have? I want an all around general purpose lens. Please help. The lens I have now is on its way out and is old.

Besides the kit lens, I got this one:

Tamron 18-200mm

Its a great all around, wide and zoom lens. Canon doesn't make this size yet, when and if they do, it will be much more expensive.

I believe you can get it at B&H though I think my DH got it at Beachcamera.com since they had the best price at the time.

I have some other lenses from my old Canon Film SLR that are compatible with the digital, but going forward I would get lenses that are made for exclusively for digital cameras like the one above.

Thinking of getting a "nifty fifty" 50mm lens, which I heard is a great, cheap ($70?) lens for taking portraits.
