Can a pediatrician tell the difference between allergies and a cold????
The reason I ask is because Im scheduled for a c-section on Monday. My mom watches DD while I am at work and she thinks (although she is not sure since its allergy season) she might have a cold. Now DD is sneezing. Im so upset about this. I dont want to not see DD for the 4 days of being in the hospital and Im so scared that I might get sick and then give it to DS when he is born.
What should I do??? Should I call teh ped. to ask if they can tell the difference between allergies or a cold?

As a severely allergic person, I can feel the physiological differences between allergy and cold symptoms. A pediatric ENT or immunologist/allergist should be able to tell if your pediatrician has difficulty. My ENT was able to tell with me as an adult.

it can be hard to tell the difference. I know on that chart it says fever never - but I know that I get allergies all the time and I have had a low grade fever (like 100.2) - the ENT and allergist over the years told me that it was not unusual to get a low fever - not a high one. But your ped should be able to tell if she is having allergy issues versus a cold.

Colds tend to start with clear drainage from the nose but will turn yellow or green. Allergies stay persistently clear. BUT- allergies CAN turn into a sinus infection which WILL make mucus green.

Not sure if they can since the symptoms are very close. But I would bring her to the ped to be on the safe side. If it's something that's contagious the ped should put her on medicine. Just let you ped know your concerns and they'll make sure to thouroughly check her our and elieviate any worries you may have.
