The chances of gettig Listeria seem to be slim, but my motto is:
When in doubt...Don't.
So... will you stop driving to work then? Because you *could* potentially (God forbid) have something happen to you and your baby on the way to work... higher chances of that happening than of getting Listeria.
It's not the best analogy because yes, you need take the risk of driving to work because you need to make a living but you don't *need* to eat feta cheese. But you get the idea...
I just think that it's easy to get out of control with all the don'ts of pregnancy without enough hard evidence to back it up. So my motto is, when in doubt, ask your Dr.
to put the numbers in perspective to hopefully help...
the American pregnancy association states on average there are 675 pregnant women per year affected by listeria ....
In comparison they list the statistics of death by car accident for pregnant women at 40, 000 per year
Im NOT trying to in any way undermine the risk at ALL ....BUT you have a much better chance of getting hit by lightening then getting lysteria...and if PG women avoided ALL things dangerous to them or their baby they wouldnt drive, fly , or walk...
I just wanted to show this, because the panic over eating a hotdog shown above shows that panic can happen over something with a risk so small.....

I eat hot dogs all the time. In fact, they're one of my frequent cravings. My baby's incredibly healthy.

I never heard this either, before I came here anyway! My first son is a very healthy little boy, now I am PG with twins and my Doctor basically told me I could eat whatever I wanted, with the exception (sp?) of the large fish, like shark, which is because of the mercury content. I eat bleu cheese on my salad whenever I go out to dinner, I also eat cold cuts (in moderation) - Now you all have me second guessing.

I did ask my Dr, that's why I don't.
You're right, it is very easy to get out of control with all this stuff. I know it's something small, but these are a few foods I can certainly live without for the next several months, and that's why I choose not to eat them.

I also eat hot dogs and cold cuts, but not every day or even alot every week. MAYBE a turkey sandwich every other week....maybe a hot dog every two weeks.
MY dr didn't say NO to anything really....she said there were no major studies to prove adverse affects

Re: Can a PG lady eat blue cheese or blue cheese dressing?
My dr had said every thing in moderation. He didn't say there was anything I cannot eat. He said name something and he can give me a story why I should eat it - even fruits and veggies (think pesticides they are sprayed with). He said everything in moderation is fine. I hate hot dogs at bbq's in the summer, cold cuts (actually due to my GD I was told I had to eat them for lunch!!!), feta on a salad, etc. - but all in moderation. My baby is 100%heathly. It is all up to you and how you feel about things.

It's true that pregnant women shouldn't eat unpasteurized cheeses, but US standards for cheeses and all dairy products are extremely strict, so pretty much everything you buy in the stores, as long as it's not imported cheese, will met US pasteurization requirements. Just be wary of any imported cheeses....
I agree. My doctor told me to stay away from unpasteurized chesses, but anything pasteurized is OK.

Re: Can a PG lady eat blue cheese or blue cheese dressing?
My Dr. told me that they had a case of stillbirth due to soft cheeses. He told me to stay away from Blue Cheese, Feta, Brie, Fresh Mozz etc...
His motto was also "better to be safe than sorry" Some women choose to eat these things and I believe that is their right and perogative, but in my case I'll heed the words of my Dr. and stay away from it. It's not worth the risk to me. I CAN prevent this...some other things are out of my control.

Re: Can a PG lady eat blue cheese or blue cheese dressing?
When I was pregnant I didn't eat any cold cuts, hot dogs, or soft cheeses. I had a can of tuna a week, and no salmon. I didn't have any caffeine. I didn't eat peanut butter. I was told to avoid them by my doctor, but I think I went overboard.
I was just so nervous and didn't want to take any risks. But I think any of those things in moderation are probably just fine...

Re: Can a PG lady eat blue cheese or blue cheese dressing?
The thing that I never get is why it ranges so much. My OB never gave me a list of what to eat and what I couldn't and just mentioned to eat healthy from the 5 food groups.
Personally I eat everything in moderation because most likely if it's not healthy to eat all the time while pregnant, it's probably not healthy to eat all the time while not being pregnant. I've never stressed once about what I could and couldn't eat. My first came out healthy and I had no complications what-so-ever. I'm also continuing to do the same this pregnancy.
My motto is - "To each their own." Make whatever decision you want because you are the one either enjoying or not enjoying the food, not me.

Hotdogs are a craving of mine as well. My dr said it was fine, just make sure they are cooked VERY well.........she said this for cold cuts too, if you zap them in the microwave to steaming, they will be fine

Exactly. That's the same with anything though. Any meat can be dangerous if it's not cooked properly and any dairy foods can be dangerous if not refrigerated properly. I think as long as you keep things at the appropriate temperatures and you eat things in moderation, you'll be absolutely fine.

Re: Can a PG lady eat blue cheese or blue cheese dressing?
I avoided unpasterized cheeses while I was pg. I still ate blue cheese dressing with wings and hot dogs in moderation. I was very particular about where I got my cold cuts and heated them in the microwave for 15 secs before eating to kill any bacteria.

Re: Can a PG lady eat blue cheese or blue cheese dressing?
Thank GOD I'm allergic to cheese!
Other things I just eat in moderation - tuna fish, cold cuts, etc.... I do have a girlfriend who WILL NOT eat anything on the dr's not-so-good list at all! I think the bottom line is, trust your doctor and do what you feel most comfortable doing.
