Re: can anyone get someone's death certificate??
the ONLY person who can get a death certificate is the next of kin. I asked this because i was worried of my dh's parents trying to claim things they are not entitled to. HTH

Re: can anyone get someone's death certificate??
If it's past a certain amount of time after the person died (50 years or so?) the death certificates become public record and anyone can request them from the board of health or the NY State Archives if they're really old, but there's a fee involved.

Re: can anyone get someone's death certificate??
I am not sure about the actual certificate but I do know that after someone dies their information becomes public record.a For example, if someone calls and asks for Jane Doe's Social Security Number and date of birth - I am supposed to just give it out without further questioning. . .
I always lie and say that I am not allowed I hope I never get caught but I just dont feel right giving that out!

You have got to have the hardest job ever. I spent way too long at the Social Security Office a few weeks ago, and it was not a very happy place. And I am pretty sure the guy next to me had a gun. They should really have metal detectors there.

Social security info is easily available online very shortly after a person's death is reported to the SSA. All you have to do is search the Social Security Death Index with the person's name, and you'll get their SSN and possibly month & year of birth, state where the number was assigned, month/year of death, and the place the last SS benefit was claimed. So I'm sure it's ok for you to give it out to callers, but it's really nice of you to be concerned!
