The last 2 years we stayed at the Beachcomber. It's got a pool and tennis courts and you just walk over Old Montauk Highway to the beach (it's about 2 sec from town). It's kid friendly and we got a suit with a kitchen.
THis year we're trying a different place that I think is called Ocean Beach Resorts that is right in town, has a pool and is right on the beach or across the street from it. They have different buildings with different rooms and ones with kitchens.
ETA Sorry, these are in Montauk.

If you are looking for an affordable place with no frills, and RIGHT at the beach, the East Deck Motel is really nice.
DH and I were just there for a few days.
It is an old place, not fancy by any means, and is VERY affordable as far as places out there are. The rooms have a kitchen (stove, fridge, table), full bed, and cot. There is no AC, which I was freaking about, but it is so cool as it is right at the beach, that you won't even miss it. We brought a fan in case, but it wasn't necessary. It is all families that stay there and there are tons of kids. They have a pool and some swings also.
We plan to go back next summer!
ETA: It's not near the "town" so it's kind of private in that tourists are not hanging around. It's about a 2-3 minute drive to the town part.

I agree. They have efficiencies by the pool and across the street from the ocean. Plus, you're in town so you can pretty much walk everywhere except to the harbor.
