Re: Can anyone tell me how they measure your cervix??
They do transvaginal sono to measure......they might also do a manual internal if they cant see it to good on the sono.

the length of the cervix can either be measured via ultrasound or by an internal manual exam. obviously the sono is more accurate, since with the manual exam what you're getting is just an estimate of length from the doctor. with the sono they're actually measuring it.
BUT either way, it's important to remember that cervical length is a dynamic measurement, meaning that it can fluctuate depending on the circumstances. for example, if baby's head or another body part is pressing against the cervix, it might squish a little and measure shorter than it really is.
so really, all these measurements need to be taken with a grain of salt.

Re: Can anyone tell me how they measure your cervix??
They use a transvaginal sonogram (or dildocam as I like to call it) and check it internally. I will say this...it is a very important measurement and I have to disagree wtih AP who said to take the measurements with a grain of salt. If it weren't for the fact that they have been on top of this pregnancy and measuring my cervix every two weeks - I would have lost this baby much like we lost our son last year. If your cervix is anything under 3 cm at 20 weeks, then it is cause for concern. Especially since you have had a procedure which can weaken the cervix. I had a cone biopsy 6 years ago which apparently weakened my cervix. My cervical measurements through this pregnancy (with a cerclage) have varied from 4 cm at 18 weeks to being funneled through the stitch. This doesn't mean you will have a problem, but it's great that your Dr. is staying on top of it and making sure all is well.

i dont think alexlynn7 meant the exam itself should be taken with a grain or salt - it is OBVIOUSLY very important. i think she meant the measurements vary from day to day (somewhat, depending on the tech who does the measuring and how your baby is laying) so if there is a change from exam to exam not to panic.
annnyway - GOOD LUCK!!
