Can I ask a PCOS Question?
I'm sorry to barge in on your board ladies but I lurk and I thought that perhaps someone could answer my questions or point me in the right direction. Is it possible to have PCOS and have normal periods? I never had any problems with my periods. I was clockwork with or without birth control and I had not problem getting pregnant. The reason I ask is because I feel like I have other symptoms that point in that direction. I had a VERY low milk supply when I tried to breastfeed.
I have excess facial hair (continues to get worse over time). I did have the Mirena IUD in and got it taken out today thinking maybe that was the cause of worsening hair but they don't think so.
I'm overweight and having a very difficult time losing weight. I am dieting and exercise regularly and am stuck at 20 pounds for 3 months. I just keep going up and down.
Sometime sex is painful/uncomfortable.
I don't have bad acne but I do have some, alot on my jaw area.
I'm not sure how hard I should push testing for this or go in another direction. They did draw blood today to make sure I don't have a tumor causing this. I feel like it's more PCOS symptoms than some kind of tumor.
Again sorry to intrude but just looking for some insight or a point in the right direction.
Thanks!

Re: Can I ask a PCOS Question?
I would say you don't have PCOS.
Because you have regular period and got PG easily, you probably don't have it. The only way to know for sure would be to have an internal sonogram done and check your ovaries to see if the follicles are polycystic.
The facial hair and weight gain could be thyroid related or just age...as we get older our metabolism slows down and it's harder to lose weight.
Uncomfortable sex is definitely NOT a symptom of PCOS and acne is also a small factor.
Good luck in getting to the root of your problems.

I totally agree. My period is all over the map and I have PCOS.
Was your period regular before the IUD?
Good luck to you!

Yes, I agree as well. It doesn't sound like you have pcos. Hopefully your doctor could find out what the issues are.

It was regular before I got pregnant but I never had a period until I got the IUD that I had all kind of weird bleeding from the IUD I guess. I got it out and we're going to see if my cycles go back to normal. I just feel like something isn't right hormonally with me. My facial hair isn't a few stray hairs it's a lot of hair and it's getting darker and spreading to more areas of my face. I thought it was the IUD but they don't. I guess time and blood tests will tell. Thank you so much for your input.

Re: Can I ask a PCOS Question?
I wrote a long response but my PC froze up!
YES, you can have regular menstrual flow without ovulating which is also called anaovulatory cycles. There is no definitive test for PCOS but there are usually indicators that suggest one suffers from PCOS. Usually, if you suffer from 3 of the symptoms, you do suffer from PCOS. A sonogram will determine whether or not you have poly-cystic ovaries. Having them doesn't neccesarily mean you have PCOS. These are some of blood test needed (IGTT; LH:FSH ratio; Total testosterone; DHEAS; SHBG; Androstenedione; Prolactin and TSH )
As for your weight gain, you may have an underactive thyroid (Hypothyroidism). Although PCOS and Hypothryoidism are unrelated, many PCOS sufferers do have underactive thyroid.
If you want to know for certain if you suffer from PcOS, you should go to a specialist. PCOS is so complicated that a regular OBgyn will probably miss it. After researching, I had to bring it up to my doctor that I suffered from PcOS and she later confirmed it. I was angry for not being diagnosed sooner.
BTW, there is no cure for PCOS. Here are a couple of websites with info on PcOS and the blood values for PCOS. http://www.inciid.org/faq.php?cat=complementarymed&id=2

You are right, there could be something off hormonally. As I said earlier, you should request an internal sono to see if you have poly-cystic ovaries. That is the best way to tell for sure if you have PCOS. The bloodwork will let you know what hormonal imbalances you may have. This can also define wether or not you are suffering from a thyroid or hormone problem not related to your reproductive system.

Re: Can I ask a PCOS Question?
I am one of the regular cycles pcos girls. You could have set your watch by my cycle yet I was not Oing or at least not good eggs. No one suspected a thing till I was 28yo. The only thing I had was weight gain. I had an sonagram done and low and behold there were my beautiful pearls . I am on Metformin and it has cleared my ovaries up and helped with my weight gain. So ask your doctor to check your ovaries. This Pcos thing is a tricky one. good luck

Re: Can I ask a PCOS Question?
I have PCOS and my cycles are slightly irregular. AF comes every month, but anywhere between 24-31 days.
I have "pearly" ovaries and weight issues, but no insulin problems. I do not have any of the pesky symptoms that most ladies experience such as facial hair or acne, but I have issues with conceiving.
Mine was determined by a blood test.
