Can I ask a question about the video of the little boy in the car seat?

If he had been strapped into the car in a 5 point harness but the seat was secured into the car with the seat belt that failed wouldn't the outcome have the potential to be the same? I know the tether on top could have been what saved him but what if that flying around the car strapped into the seat is 1" of plastic supposed to save him? I know he wouldn't have been thrown from the car but being tossed around the car could be deadly as well.

I have the utmost sympathy for the family that had to go through this horrible experience. I just wonder if they should be advocating something about seat belts not 5 point harnesses.

I thought the same thing after watching the video, the 5 point harness would have been usless if the seat was still secured with the seat belt that failed. The only way to really prevent it would be to secure a seat with LATCH and a seatbelt AND the top teether to have backup in case one failed, but not all cars have the LATCH option.

Yes, but in my case Emma, who is in a 5 pt harness (Marathon) now will have to be belted in in 4 more lbs. The weight limit on my LATCH in my car is 40lbs...

He could have lived if he was in a car seat with a 5 point harness because although the seat still may have been ejected he would have been secured in it and may not have suffered the fatal injuries he did.

Right. I think what the family is trying to say is that even if the seatbelt had still failed, the seat itself could have save him, had he been secured with a 5-point harness. So sad.Chat Icon
