Can I ask a silly questin re: Benjamin Moore paint?
What is all the hype about BM paint?
Every time someone paints a room, and people want to know what color it is, it's ALWAYS BM.
We've always used Lowe's Brand (Valspar) and been extremely pleased with it. Just wondering if I am missing something.....

Re: Can I ask a silly questin re: Benjamin Moore paint?
I can't speak to the quality of Valspar b/c we don't have a Lowes near us, but when we painted our new house, we went with BM b/c we have had horrible experiences with Behr paint from Home Depot. The Behr paint we have used in the past would not be true to the paint chip colors, and would often crack or just go on or come off irregularly.
So for us, it was a matter of quality.

Re: Can I ask a silly questin re: Benjamin Moore paint?
For me I think BM has good quality paint, but Valspar is very good as well. I think BM & Valspar cover really well on the walls. I think they are thicker paints, but I could be wrong. For me I will never use Behr or Olympic ever again. I used them years ago and I didn't like how many coats of paint I needed to use. BM usually covers in 1 coat, but I usually use 2 coats. There are other good paints out there too, like Sherwin Williams & others I can't think of the names of right now.

Good to know, thank you!!
We also had a bad experience with the Behr paint--but we used Valspar when we painted DD's nursery, and more recently DS' nursery, and we've been very happy with how it holds up (now, we'll see about when DS pees on the wall ).
How is the coverage? Does BM usually only need one coat?
We are planning to have our entire house painted soon (foyer, hallways, etc. etc.) and I'm just wondering if I should be looking at BM.

Thanks--I actually just posted that question below, probably right after you posted!

I think it depends on the type of BM paint you use. Like Jen said, most of the time you can get away with one coat but we used two coats to get the proper coverage. We used the Aura line for most of the house and it came out wonderfully. The trick with Aura is that b/c it is so thick (you don't need to prime a surface prior to painting) is that it will go on slightly spotty in the first coat, but with the second, it fills in any gaps that may be there and look rich and full once it dries. We used an eggshell finish for all the rooms (but the kitchen where we used a satin finish) and despite a few marks we accidentally made brushing up against it with bags, we haven't had to retouch at all.
love love love it and would use it again and again and will.
GL!

never tried Lowes, but I agree BM covers so much better than Behr. We had an awful experience with Behr and only great ones with BM.

I think it's a combination of being a 'cool' brand name thing personally, as well as Pottery Barn uses BM paint and some people see that and want to use it because of that. I think BM happens to be very good paint as well, but so is Sherwin Williams and Pittsburgh Paints.
I've had both good and bad experiences with Behr paint in my old apartment - after the bad one i swore i'd never use it again

Re: Can I ask a silly questin re: Benjamin Moore paint?
The only paint Ive ever had an issue with was BM, so I hear ya. I dont get the "hype". Weve always used Valspar with the primer mixed in and have been thrilled with it.

Re: Can I ask a silly questin re: Benjamin Moore paint?
We used Behr and other paints in the past when we painted the apartments we lived in...
We wanted to try Benjamin Moore paint when we moved b/c we really liked their colors and we wanted to see if there was really a difference - since my Dad gets a discount on it, it costs us the same amount as cheaper paint would from say Home Depot or Lowes...
I notice a difference. Anytime we bought paint it looked different on the wall - but with BM paint - once it's dry it looks the same as it does on paint chip...Also the paint is much thicker and I agree that you need less coats...
I don't know if I'd use anything other than BM at this point b/c I've been really happy with our paint...

Re: Can I ask a silly questin re: Benjamin Moore paint?
It's always worked well for me. For the amount of time it takes to paint a room I can't be bothered with trying out new paints.

Re: Can I ask a silly questin re: Benjamin Moore paint?
I always use Behr from HD and have never had a problem. I only use BM when I really like a color and don't want to do a color match. Other than that I see no need to pay more than double the price for a gallon of paint.

Re: Can I ask a silly questin re: Benjamin Moore paint?
When I first painted my kitchen a red color by behr it looked like a murder scene!!!!!!!! The paint was blotchy and runny on my new sheetrocked walls. I didn't think it was fixable. I called my stepfather who is a contractor and he came over with BM aura and repainted the entire kitchen....It looked brand new and beautiful with only one coat. I never used anything other than BM after that

Re: Can I ask a silly questin re: Benjamin Moore paint?
We've used Martha's paints from Sears, and had mixed reviews. Kitchen was good, a bedroom needed many many coats. But we've heard the same about BM too. DH's family swears by them. We will probably use it in our next project.

Re: Can I ask a silly questin re: Benjamin Moore paint?
We've only used BM in our house and have had nothing but great results. It was all we used before we hired our painter and even after, that's all he uses.
I have used other brands at my parents home and was disappointed.
There are other brands that I would consider giving a shot based on their reputation: Sherwin Williams and Pratt & Lambert, but I figure why mess with a good thing.

Re: Can I ask a silly questin re: Benjamin Moore paint?
we also used BM paint for the whole apt. and I HATED IT. It was so .. eh.. watery, even though contractor put quite a few layers, contractor warned me that BM paints quality nosedived, but i did not believe him, he recommended SW, but i thought he wanted to get away with cheaper paint.. i heard from few other ppl who used to be "only BM" ppl, that it got bad. i would only recommend either SW or Valspar.

that sounds so strange to me. i've never seen a bm paint that is thin and watery... hope that you weren't taken by your contractor.

Re: Can I ask a silly questin re: Benjamin Moore paint?
We also will only use BM. We find the handling, coverage and wear superior. I made DH use Valspar because of Consumer Reports and we wound up repainting the 2 rooms we used it in. It was watery and didn't hold up well at all. For us BM is well worth the extra $$. I have rooms painted 8 yrs with BM and they look as good as the day we painted them.
