Re: Can i ask a weird question?
I worked with a man whose daughter had a severe seizure when she was just about a year old. It had to do with her temperature spiking very high very quickly. That's the only experience I know about children and seizures.

Re: Can i ask a weird question?
I have no clue, and I am sure this won't help, but my niece had an "episode" when she was about 7 months, and when my BIL took her to the doctor, he said she prob. had a small seizure and it was normal . So I would like to know also..........

Agreed. I have a friend whose dd would get seizures, so they took her in to get a catscan and monitored it and said it would go away on its own.

I have a friend who's daughter used to have febrile seizures (seizures brought on by high fevers). The girl is now almost 6 and has never had them since infancy. The doctors said it is normal. Hope all is OK!!

That is what Im thinking they are.
My nephews, so far both...ages are different...have suffered seizures..mostly cause by high temperatures.
Now I hate to sound mean by saying this but my SIL likes to create lies and makes things seem bigger than they are....so I dont freak out about hearing about it but at the same time Im thinking, WHY ARENT YOU BUGGING?
SO apparently my newphew had one last nite and is at docs now..possible ear infection.
As a mom now, a seizure to me sounds BAD and scary.
She also had epilepsy as a child (I guess she outgrew it) so I didnt know if it was possibily that form.
Anyways...thanks ladies..you helped clear some stuff for me.
Like always!

Re: Can i ask a weird question? Re:seizures
There are different types of seizures...
there are the ones that you cant miss - where the child is on the floor, eyes rolling back, shaking, etc...
then there are the silent ones that you could miss really easily, where it just looks like the child is spacing out momentarily, and the comes back... or a little eye flutter and thats it... it depends...

Re: Can i ask a weird question? Re:seizures
They just had something this morning on the Today show about epilepsy and Tiki Barber was saying that his son has febrile seizures and that he had them and so did his brother. He only had them with high fevers. It is actually a lot more common than I think people hear about or realize. I think some people outgrow them - or just never have them again and others have them for life.

Re: Can i ask a weird question? Re:seizures
febrile seizures are relatively common. they happen in like 1 out of 20-25 kids, usually during toddlerhood.
they are typically harmless. they don't cause brain damage. they are outgrown in early childhood.
the vast majority - i'm gonna say 95% - of the kids don't develop any kind of seizure disorder in childhood/adulthood, but there is some increased risk of a seizure disorder, especially if there is a family history of seizures...
i've worked with lots of these kids. let me know if you would like any more info, hth.

Re: Can i ask a weird question? Re:seizures
My friends DD had a seizure in the mall and when they took her to the hospital she had a VERY high fever and also an ear infection. Every since then anytime her DD gets a high fever she will get a seizure, so my friend has to make sure to not let her DD's temp get to high, so stressful on them, I feel so bad.
When I asked her why she got them, she said its just something some kids get when they have high fevers.

Re: Can i ask a weird question? Re:seizures
I just wanted to add one more thing about febrile seizures. It is not how high the temp goes that causes the seizure -- it is how fast it goes up. So it could go from 98 to 102 really fast and the baby could have one, but then again it could go from 98 to 104 really slow and it could not happen. Usually, in children who've had them, you start treating the fever right away to prevent that spike.

Re: Can i ask a weird question? Re:seizures
I know two children that are older (one is 8 one is around 15) that still have seizures. One gets them when he gets too warm, the other was born with the condition and takes medication for it.

Re: Can i ask a weird question? Re:seizures
Febrile seizures are caused by high fevers, however, your SIL's kids are at higher risk considering she had epilepsy as a child. Epilepsy is in my family and my cousins suffers from seizures every few months if he does not take his medication properly. In most cases they sound worse than they are. Seizures generally dont have any long-term effects as long as they only last for a short time. Some people have mini or "cluster" seizures periodically and may not even know it.
