Can I get away with this?
My birthday is January 4. It always kind of sucks because very few people come out because #1- they're broke after the holidays and New Years and #2- because it's always freezing! #3- there's nothing all that exciting to do in the winter. Would it be really lame for me to organize a day trip, kind of like a half birthday celebration? I'm thinking of planning a day of zip lining up by Hunter Mountain. I think a lot of my friends would really enjoy something like that. And then stay overnight and just go to the local bars. People would then be able to come up for any or all of it.
ETA- it seems as the consensus is negative to the half bday idea. But either way, it sounds like something fun to do. So I'm going to suggest it to my friends and see who's interested.

I think the trip sounds awesome, but personally I would feel awfully silly calling it a half birthday party at 30 some odd years old so I would just organize it as a fun day with friends!

This!. Sounds more like jsut a fun thing to do. At 40 I don't do birthdays with everyone anymore....and the half bday is kinda weird and I would probably if a friend did it.
Sorry just my opinion.

Re: Can I get away with this?
I say go for it and call it what you want. You want to celebrate your 1/2 bday then go for it girl! I'm a June bday girl so pretty lucky I'm 6 months away from the holidays. My sister's bday is mid Dec so usually gets ripped off with gifts and celebration. We always get a cake when we get together for Hanukkah. This year for my bday (since it is on a Saturday) we are going to the aquarium and meeting family there for the day then dinner after.
I wanted to do a pool party for DH's 30th (a few years ago) and since his bday is the end of September I just made it the end of August. He was even more surprised since it wasn't near his bday. LOL Enjoy and celebrate!

Re: Can I get away with this?
yeah...don't call it a half birthday. My thing is...it's a great fun thing to do...but then what about your birthday? you should still do SOMETHING on your birthday or you'll still feel like your birthday sucks. My B-day is december 27th. Last year we went roller skating. maybe you could organize something simple and silly...maybe just have a wine and cheese party with game night at home. (DH does all the clean up afterwards ) play funny games like pervartistry (put the kids to bed for that one)

I would think it's kinda silly. Would you expect another celebration when your real birthday rolls around?

hmm yea I agree I don't think you can call it a half birthday because when you're real birthday comes around I feel like you still might want to do a little something with close friends and fam.

There is no celebration for my real birthday. DH and I go out for dinner alone. If anything, we go out for drinks after and a couple people meet us. But it's never really a celebration- no cake or singing or anything like that.

So in order for it to be a celebration their needs to be cake and singing? Dinner with your man and drinks with friends isn't enough?
If one of my friends asked me to celebrate a 1/2 birthday that involved me going away I would be like and then tell them they're out of their ***** mind!!!
The older I get the more I want things to be simple. But that's me

Re: Can I get away with this?
I would say, no, you can't get away with it. It sounds like a fun outing and you should organize it as a fun summer activity but its not your birthday and it has nothing to do with your bday. I don't think anyone over 10 should get a half birthday . Regardless, no one I know gets a big deal ade out of every birthday unless its a milestone bday. It is what it is....

It's more so because we tend to do bigger things for our friend's birthdays. There's usually 10-15 of us doing dinner and drinks. It's definitely more of a celebration then my bday is. I guess different people do different things.

When your 9 and your birthday is on Christmas Eve and you don't have people make a big whoop about it, it stinks. But when you're over the age of like, 20 you need to get over it.

Re: Can I get away with this?
The trip with friends sounds cool and I'd just leave it at that.
Billing it as a half-birthday might imply that you want gifts or whatever, KWIM? Strings attached and all that.
Or like a PP said, if you want the big celebration, do a birthday/New Year's bash.

And usually I'm okay with the whole "any reason to get drunk and eat like I have two assholes!" excuse, but half-birthdays for anyone of any age don't do it for me.
Maybe since my birthday is in the armpit of August - I didn't do the school party, I couldn't hand out invites at school like other kids, friends couldn't come because they'd be on family trips, etc., but I didn't celebrate it in February when I was a kid just because. I just coped with it.

Re: Can I get away with this?
A 1/2 birthday does sound slightly weird.
But, if you want do it. I would go and it sounds awesome. But my birthday is thanksgiving week and I always get "screwed" because of the holidays and the weather. (Seriously, the weeks leading up to it are beautiful. Thanksgiving week hits and BAM.. freezing freakin' cold!).

Pretend I said this ... But nicer.
I say organize it as a fun event but no birthday ties.
It almost sounds like your friends/family may be a little too uninvolved with your birthday for your liking (for whatever reason - broke , tired from holidays , maybe even a little bit uncaring) but it sounds like you're trying to force them to care. I'm sorry they don't step up and host something for you.. That part sucks .. But I would leave it be.
Sometimes from your posts, I want to adopt you as a friend, sister in law, and wife. You sound like you're a really good role in all of those things and it sounds like the people in your life don't appreciate them or something and I'm sorry if you always feel shafted.
Can you express to your friends that this year they do something in January? A big dinner like you guys do for everyone else? Maybe the end of January?
