Can I just paint something white?
Meaning, do I have to strip it or anything or can I jut paint over it white and call it a day

You probably don't have to strip it, unless it's painted wood & you want the original wood to show through light coat of paint. If you jstu want to paint it to look solid white, depending in what kind of surface it is now, you may need a special primer for glossy surfaces.

I have furniture that I painted. I hit it a little with the palm sander, then primed and painted it. Came out great!
