Can someone explain the fire dept santas that everyone is talking about?
A santa comes on a fire truck? I've never heard of this. I think I'm really liking Long Island! How do you know if your dept has a santa? How do you know if they are coming?

in my dad's dept. santa goes around the town and makes stops at firemen's houses.
We were at my mom's today for my kids.
Of course when santa is stopped the other kids on the block come and see santa (as well as tigger and dora) in our case.
the town I live in, santa walks up and down the blocks handing out candy canes.
every town is different. they don't make a formal annoucement. you just have to be around to hear and see it if you don't know a member

The first time I heard the trucks coming through when we first moved to LI, I thought there was a horrible fire in our development  Then I realized it was santa. We just saw them on Middle Country Road a few minutes ago.

They came by yesterday, but not today...
There were about 3 fire trucks, two Suburbans (probably Chief cars), and another truck pulling a trailer that had Santa in a sleigh with some wireframed reindeer "pulling" him. They usually go up and down all the streets, so you know when he's in the neighborhood. By now, we expect him, but the first year....  You never want to hear fire trucks driving really slowly in your neighborhood most of the time!

Almost every department has the Santa come by on a Fire truck. DH is in a local Fire Department which has 3 stations. Each station did it a different weekend. His station did last weekend and when they came by DD was napping

My DH is a Fireman, and every year his trucks come by our house with Santa, and some of DH friends, they usually stop in for a beer or 2 also... 
They go all around our town, usually to family's who are in the Fire dept.

I've learned to listen for it around this time of year. They go crazy with the sirens as they travel. I don't know when this tradition started b/c I do not remember it from when I was a kid.

Smithtown announces the date and starting time each year.
It's AMAZING!! 
we didnt get to see it this year  we had a holiday party in the family.
does anyone know if commack does anything ?

That's what I thought too. I got the chills when I heard all the sirens...Then a few minutes later they got closer and closer and I saw what it was

I live in Port Jefferson Station and they came Thurs-fri and Saturday. They usually come the week before x-mas.

We got to see him a few weeks ago when coming out of Music Together - Cailen looked a little confused by the whole thing!!!
