Can someone give me basic fever info for a 1-year-old?- updated (very long)
We're thinking it's teething, since her molars are coming in, but poor DD had a horrible night and is still in tough shape this morning. She slept maybe 2 hours total all night and didn't want to be put down, slept on me for an hour this morning in the chair.
At 1:30am we noticed she was hot, her temp was 102.3, gave her Tylenol, helped with the fever but she still didn't sleep.
At 7:15am, her temp was 103.4, same thing, gave Tylenol, helped with temp, but still not wanting to sleep.
What the the red-alert temps to call the doc? Anything else I should/should not be doing?
I am going to call the ped in a few minutes, but I wanted to ask the experts here first
Also, her urine is really smelly, I mean not normal smelly. Is that common with a fever/teething? She hasn't eaten anything new in the last few days.

Usually with teething a fever will be low grade. 102 or 103 seems to high...
Hope all is well.

Just saw this....
My DD gets UTI's all the time (she has reflux where her urine backflows into her kidneys) - Anyway... smelly urine, not eating, and fever usually mean UTI. Also if she goes to the bathroom fregquently or will only pee at night - All symptoms of a UTI for us.

Re: Can someone give me basic fever info for a 1-year-old?- updated (very long)
Thanks for asking about us ladies.
Ugh, it's been a crazy day. At DD's 11:30am appointment, they say the temp shouldn't be that high due to teething (as others said here too), but ears were fine, throat fine, etc. Then I mention about the urine smell, so they "bagged" DD...they attach a little ziploc size bag to her area, put the diaper on, and wait for her to pee. She was soooo unhappy all day b/c she's got a fever and didn't sleep at all last night, so she is screaming in the doctor's office, I couldn't do anything as we waited for her to pee About 15 minutes later, still no pee, and DD is hysterical b/c she's overtired. They say I can go home and wait for her to pee, but come back when the pee in the bag is no more than an hour old.
As soon as we get in the car, she's out cold, so I drove around for 45 minutes so she could get a decent nap, the longest stretch of sleep she's had in 24 hours. We get back to the ped's office, I check her bag in the diaper, still no pee, so she & I sit in the car for another 20 minutes. Finally she pees.
Go in, they test the bag, comes back with high levels of nitrates, etc...which likely indicate an infection. Now, with this positive test, they need to do a catheter She's again hysterical, I'm near tears. The doc said even though they could get a drop of urine using the catheter even if her bladder is fully empty, since she's so unhappy, go back home for an hour, make her drink, go back for the catheter to make sure 100% they'd get enough urine.
So that's what we did, and DH was home by then so he went too. They did the catheter, and the results came back not as bad as the bag sample, but that's just the quick review of the specimen, they'll know 100% tomorrow. So now, she's just doing Tylenol for the fever, no antibiotics necessary yet. They'll let me know the results tomorrow, and we'll go from there. IF the results come back showing an infection, they'd treat, and send us for a sono of her kidneys to check things out.
Poor girl just wants to sleep but can't She's just so warm, and we were out of the house from 11:15-4:15 for the doctor, with a quick stop here for a few minutes.
So now that I'm typing this, I'm wondering why I didn't ask the ped this-- if it's not a UTI or another infection, what's making her fever so high? Her top AND bottom molars are coming in now, but as I said, she agreed that a temp that high is usually not from teething.
I know worse things can happen, but it's so sad to see her so uncomfortable. She doesn't even have the energy to walk around, or even crawl.
Sorry so long, feels better to get it out. Thank you for asking

I was just looking for your update from this morning --- sounds like you guys had an awful day. They did the pee bag and catheter to DS once, i never heard him scream so loud. Hopefully you'll get some answers. But if that comes back negative the fever could be because of a virus in which case she'd just need to ride it out. They can't really give her anything. Either way, hope she feels better soon!!!
