the catch is that Longwood is not the best school district. Coram is nice, but in the Middle country or Comsewogue school districts.

I live in Coram, there are some really nice areas in Coram. Longwood is NOT the best school district, but it is FAR from being the worst

Re: Can someone give me info on Coram?? Longwood School District??
I grew up in Coram in the W-section which is a really nice neighborhood, but went to Comsewogue. There are a few areas of Coram that are not super well kept, as with many towns but there are many neighborhoods where the pride of ownership really shows. Its a working/middle class town. I now live in Ridge which is also Longwood, its a very large district based on geographic square footage. It includes all or part of these towns Coram, gordon heights, middle Island, upton, Ridge, shoreham, yapank, east yaphank, north shirley. It is a racially & ecomonically diverse district. The elementary schools do quite well in ratings, the middle school & HS come in average. It has always had a negative stigma attached to it whereas districts with smaller minority populations & similar ratings don't. Our budget always passes, our claim to fame is we have the highest senior population of any district in suffolk. We have an awesome public library. The kids in my neighborhood have great school pride, lots of honor roll bumper stickers on cars. We also have great sports teams. Our varisity cheerleaders were the US national Champs a couple of years ago. Here's a link to the district website. Longwood
HTH good luck in your search!

its always important to hear more than "hearsay" from people that have never lived/worked/raised children/ or spent any significant time in a town or district.
ETS-if I were looking for opinions on a car, I'd look for advice from people that already have one rather than people that "heard" stuff about it. To me a town is no different.

Thank you for your insight - while you are right, I never have lived in the district, DH and I looked for about 2 years for a house, and researching school districts was big for us. DH is a teacher, and we did not want to buy in the Longwood SD for numerous reasons. And everyone has a different experience, I am positive from experience that everyone who lives in the district is not as satisfied as you are. But that is the case for any SD!
But I will agree that it seems like every car in the district has a longwood bumper sticker - they seem to have a lot of involvement.

I totally agree that different families can have totally different levels of happiness & success in the same district.
I always find it interesting to read the parent reviews on greatschools.net just as an example Smithtown is highly regarded as a "desirable" school district but when I read the reviews for Accompsett elem school I think anything but desirable. Then when I look at Coram Elem(which would be the school the OP would be concerned with) I think, wow, if I'm an involved parent-which I am this school will be great. I realize there is a lot more to a school district than elementary schools, but having raised one child that is almost 21 & stepchild that is almost 14 its really hard to look that far in advance. Lots of people on LIF don't even have children yet or they bought or are looking to buy a starter. I purposely moved into Port Jefferson District when my son was very young to give him "the best", well that was a mistake I regret everyday. His learning disability went undiagnosed till 4th grade even though I was constantly demanding he be tested. That district had NO special ed at that time & had my son gone to Longwood(known for great special ed)or Connetquot where we moved to after PJ he would have received services that would have saved us both years of suffering. Nobody can predict the child they will bear & what specific needs they'll have. As they say "when you make plans, god laughs at them". A school district will never be the most important determining factor in a successful child, the parents always will be.

I'm a product of the Longwood SD, but that was almost 20 years ago!
I also grew up in Coram (actually in the development right behind Coram School). I agree that the SD is not the best, but it's not the worst either. It's been a long time and I no longer live on LI, so I guess I'm not much help.

Re: Can someone give me info on Coram?? Longwood School District??
my dh grew up in coram and we lived there for a short time all of Dh friends and family live there. So I know many people that have gone thru the district and would say about 2 out of the 15 have gone on to higher education which for me was not that great. Im sure the statistics have changed a bit. This was back when Dh graduated in mid ninties. My cousins go to the elementary school and the my mil works in the middle school and I hear that is quite good.
The W section is really nice as is th musket ridge and tanglewood hils section.
The gordon heights section is very bad which I feel gives the entire coram area a bad rep.

I agree that Longwood has great special education programs. My SIL & BIL live in Yapank in the Longwood school district. My newphew is in 4th grade and is doing well. My SIL is fairly involved in the school and likes it. However, she said for her son's elementary school, there is very little parent involvement. Personally, I see minimal parental involvement in the district I work in as well. It all depends on a person's experience.

I think you need to do your own research and then decide. Take a drive through the area the house is in, see what its like.
Aside from SD, I know that there are parts of coram that have a high amount of residents on the sexual predator list, I would personally want to stay away from that.

That is the Gordon Heights area. It has the most concentrated number of level 3 sexual offenders (the worst kind) per square mile than any other pocket of long island. Check the nys sex offender registry.

Isn't Gordon Heights part of Medford? Or does it have sections in Coram too?

Kelly, thank you for posting the positives. Too often, people are quick to post the negatives about a SD, without ever having lived there. That is my biggest pet peeve on this site. I am in Pat-Med, and I can't tell you how many people have posted negatively on my SD, and most do not live there, or have ever lived there. Sure, it's not the best, but it's not the worst either.
My 2 cents on SD's is this- there is no perfect school system. As long as you are there with your children, guiding them through their years in school, you will have no problems whether you are in the best or the worst SD's. Plenty of successful people came from the worst of schools, and plenty of people who aren't doing so well came from the "best" schools. Sorry if I am rambling, but I just had to.

Re: Can someone give me info on Coram?? Longwood School District??
My husband grew up in Coram and the area was pretty nice a lot of well kept homes. He went to elementary and middle school there and some of high school. His parents were not happy with the HS and put him in Catholic School. I think its the school more than the area and specifically the high school. And Gordan Heights is in Coram right by the Home Depot on Middle Country Road and It does have a rediculous number of sex offenders(Look it up) My Girlfriend works in the district too and feels the same way. Fine in the lower grades but not too good in the HS.

Depending on the location of the house, some of the elementary schools are okay. I lived in Middle Island and my neighbors did like the elementary school.
