Can someone please explain this phenomenon?
Scenario: 3 people in room.
One is a 6 week old baby (substitute any age baby, if you like), other 2 are adults of opposite sexes. Neither has any known auditory problems.
Baby is sitting in swing, swinging. Baby starts to cry. Baby starts to cry LOUD. To one of the adults, the cries are very obvious. The other adult, however, appears as if they were sitting in quiet solitude. Person 1 stares at Person 2. Hard. Still, no reaction. Crying continues, with varying tones. Person 1 gets up, frustration is apparent, extra moves made in the process to clarify this frustration to even the simplest level. Person 2 still completely oblivious, vegetation status becomes questionable. Person 1 sticks binky in said baby's mouth, baby stops crying. Person 1 biffs Person 2 in the head and returns to their seat on the couch. Person 2 scratches their head (visualize: Baboon) and returns to oblivion.
In fairness, Person 1 was sitting 1 foot closer to crying baby, if that weighs into your assessment of the situation.
Question: 2 adults in the same room, 1 hears a crying child, 1 doesn't. Explain.

Re: Can someone please explain this phenomenon?
My DH is deaf in one ear. Sometimes I think it's both. That's how that scenario happens in our house.
Except he'd b*tch if I biffed him, so instead I call him an idiot under my breath.
It's not like he can hear me anyway.

Re: Can someone please explain this phenomenon?
It is called selective hearing. It is very common in teenagers and to my surprise even men.

I biff him all the time. I sometimes think he keeps a record of it in a little notebook.... just in case.

Re: Can someone please explain this phenomenon?
Easy answer: Person 2 is a man, Person 1 is a woman. Same scenario in this house EVERY day. And night.

This has led to many, "Seriously?!?! No. Really. Seriously!" moments lately.
