Can this be considered a form of child abuse?

I went to a shopping center this afternoon on my lunch break and when I got back to my car, I made a call on my cell so I hung out in my parking spot for a few minutes.

these 2 women with a 3 or 4 yr old in tow get into an SUV parked next to me and proceed to blast, and I mean BLAST rap music. I had my windows closed and the heat on, and I could barely hear my DH on the phone! one of the women puts the kid in the back, radio still BLASTING!!!!!! it was ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!

I felt so bad for that little girl Chat Icon if it was that loud in my own car next to them with the windows shut, I can't even begin to imagine how loud it was inside that car. Chat Icon

Re: Can this be considered a form of child abuse?

i'm always VERY careful to call something child abuse. although i think this is not the way to raise a child and those women are idiots, i don't think it's child abuse.

Not very smart for little ears.
Unfortunately I don't think this would be considered abuse though. Poor kids.

I agree...I saw the same thing once

but the boy was like 10, the windows were down, he was in the car alone with rap music playing with elicit lyrics Chat Icon

Re: Can this be considered a form of child abuse?

As a former CPS investigator, it may be stupid and totally wrong but it's not abuse. It likely wouldn't make it past the screening at the central register...not that its rightChat Icon

I am the daughter of a drummer. Chat Icon

that being said, it's probably not the best thing to have loud music on all the time..it's just ANNOYING more than anything else, it certainly isnt' child abuse.

what actually upsets me more than loud radios is when they are loud AND the base is off...that just sounds bad on all levels. Chat Icon

and don't get me started on people and their Ipods on the train. half the time I don't even need mine b/c I can clearly listen to someone elses...which boggles my mind..how loud do you need something IN YOUR EAR! Chat Icon Chat Icon

OMG... poor little kid

I don't even put the music up that loud with my dog in the car - I'm too paranoid to hurt his ears

I wouldn't call this child abuse, it's more poor parenting than anything else.

Stupidity and selfishness - poor parenting - I think abusive is kind of a strong word though -

Re: Can this be considered a form of child abuse?

it is not smart and although I personally would consider it "inadequate guardianship", the answer is NO. If you called ACS they would not take that as a child endangement case

Re: Can this be considered a form of child abuse?

don't get me wrong, I was not planning on calling CPS, nor did I write down the plate #, etc. but loud music isn't good for adult ears, and I'm sure a 3 yr olds ears are more sensitive than an adult.

I just couldn't believe that anyone could be SO SELFISH and unaware of the damage that kind of volume would have on a small child! did they do that when she was a baby too? I wouldn't be surprised if she has hearing issues. Chat Icon
