Can we please talk about ettiquite

at the work place. Please feel free to add your own:

#1- DO NOT stick/lean/touch your water bottle on the nozzle of the water cooler. Just don't. It's gross.

#2- Bathroom use: Flush. We all go-sometimes you have to go at work. Just flush. Courtesy flush never hurt anyone.

#3- Standing by the copy machine asking "are you going to be long." I'm copying/scanning things. Whether I take 1 minute or 25 minutes. I'm on it. It's my turn. Don't stand and wait for me. Don't ask me if I'm almost done and don't ask me if you can squeeze in. Wait your turn like everyone else.

#4- Your health. Everyone gets sick. It's a part of life. But please don't spread your germs more than you already have. It's not a cute look. Cover your mouth. Simple.

#5- If I'm on the phone, please don't stand by my desk and wait for me to get off. Come back, or email me. Just for that, I'll find 394847 more things to talk about.

#6- Attitude. Check it at the door. Leave it home. Don't need it, I have my own. K thankssss

#7 Do not talk to people with the their hand on the rest room door handle. Let them go to the bathroom first.

#8 Don't yell down the hall - we have telephones.

If I am clearly on my way out the door with keys in hand, be it for lunch or the end of the day. DO NOT stop me to discuss some non-important thing that can wait until tomorrow.

Dont come over to my desk and just assume I can go over with you whatever you need to go over AT THAT SECOND. I may actually be in the middle of something. Before you start talking, ask me if I have a moment.

No need to call me and then ask me when you see me if I got your email. If I didn't write you back, it's for a reason.

I agree with most of these except for this one..
I work in a big office - if i've taken the time to walk over to someone's desk to ask a question, its obviously something of importance that needs to be answered right away, otherwise i'd just email it. If i get to someone's desk and they're on the phone, generally that person will notice me and either mouth 'let me call you when i'm done', or indicate that i should wait.
Just because i happen to get there when you're on the phone, doesn't mean i did it on purpose or am doing it to be annoying.. there is usually a reason i'm there and it's no less important than what you're on the phone for.

Do not heat up stinky food in the microwave, especially fish.

Speakerphone should only be used if NO ONE ELSE can hear you.

If you bit ch about how much work you have and not enough time to do it all, don't let me catch you on your crackberry that you hide under your desk or sitting in empty conference rooms chatting on the phone that should only be used for business calls.

Re: Can we please talk about ettiquite

dont walk around the office in your dirty sweatsocks and no shoes...

our floor is newly constructed and the kitchen area is new. People leave their dirty bowls to soak in the sink all day. or even on the counter thereby cluttering it up, clogging the drain. its disgusting. i've had to post an anonoymous sign about it.

if something is in the fridge that doesnt have your name on it, its obviously not yours. do not take it or eat it!

god..i could go on and on...

This is one of my biggest pet peeves!Chat Icon We put tissues and Purell on everyone's desk for a reason - USE IT!

And I'll add:

If you're going to speak loud enough for the whole office to hear when you're on personal calls, don't complain when everyone knows your business. And definitely don't complain when others are discussing business loudly.

Do not put your boss on speakerphone so the whole office can hear him reprimanding you for not doing your work.

If you use a dish, wash it. Your mother doesn't work here and can't clean up after you.

Don't tell me you'll be taking a sick day two days from now.

Oh I could go on....

See, I disagree with this one -I think it's common courtesy to let someone know how long you'll be - if you're going to be 3 minutes, I'll wait. Why wouldn't someone stand and wait? So, when they come back there's that many more people waiting to use it?
If you're going to be 20, I don't need to stand there and waste my time when I could be doing something else.

I agree. It's also common courtesy if you're monopolizing the copier to let someone make a few copies if that's all the have.

Office equipment isn't a "dibs I got here first" kind of thing. It's for office use & efficiency is top priority.

Me too. I'll often spend 15-20+ minutes scanning documents that has to be done in batches because of the feeder capacity. I always let people in between batches to do a quick copy job and tell people if I am going to be a while. After all, it's not my machine.

I agree with all these as well. Sometimes I want to know if they will be long so I can go do something else and come back when they are done.

Chat Icon we have one in our office- the trick is to take your time on the call- that usually aggravates the crap outta them if you start asking about the person on the line's weekend, the weather or whatever lol

Do not wear jeans to the office. It is against policy. That is why there is a published dress code.

It took years just to get casual Fridays and that was finally expanded to include the summer months. Don't think that no one will notice, 'cause I certainly do !
If casual wear gets taken away from us, I will hunt you down and beat you with my typewriter.

For me its flip flops.. so very unattractive in the way snapping your gum is unprofessional.

I have to agree with the showing up at my desk expecting me to be breathlessly waiting for whatever you expect me to instantly know about without preamble.. I HATE mid sentence conversation starters "So you got that right?" umm got what? what account are you even TALKING about! Chat Icon

Re: Can we please talk about ettiquite

This is all happening to me currently since I moved to a different office.

Just because I helped your boss do something that you don't know how to do doesn't mean I will continue to do it. Don't whine to me that I know everything about the last trip he made so I should do it. Learn how to do it!

If you come in at 9 and leave before 5 please let your bosses know that you will help them with whatever they need the next day. If you think they will need something after 5 adjust your plans at the gym. I do not back you up after hours, I have my own boss to work for that keeps me here late.

If you use toilet seat covers, flush them. I'm not going to pick them up and put them in the toilet to flush. Don't leave them on the seat you just used. Gross!
