Re: can you explain excessing to me
i got excessed last year with 5 years on.
you can work as a sub out of the ATR pool the following year. i did not want to do that and went on interviews and landed a new position at a new school. you keep your benefits and pay because you didnt do anything wrong, your schools budget just cant support you anymore- so the city pays you.

Re: can you explain excessing to me
I work on Long Island so it might be different from the city. I have been excessed from my building and from the district. When I was excessed out of the building, there was a position for me somewhere in the district but I would have to post for it. When I was excessed from the district I was still paid over the summer because I spread out my paychecks. However, if I was not hired back by September I would not get paid for that year. In fact, they even stopped giving me direct deposit after June. I always used my husband's insurance but I believe health insurance stopped after the last day of school as well.

Re: can you explain excessing to me
I have been excessed twice (I am a guidance counselor not a teacher though).
The first time I used to open market and also emailed and mailed my resume to tons of schools. I interviewed at a school where no vacancy was posted--so if you like a certain district or area email (using your DOE email) or mail the Prinicpal directly--to all schools in the area. I secured a job and was no longer in excess.
The 2nd time I was excessed my Principal was hoping my collegue would retire either mid year or at the end of the year so she asked that I "wait it out"....the District placed me in another school 3 days a week, and my original school 2 days. I am currently considered in excess. I could have applied on open market but knowing my collegue was retiring at the end of the year I waited it out--now in Sept I will be back at my original school.
If you LIKE your district my recommendation is to wait it out--maybe something in the district or in your school will open up--they can not make you go out of district so if you do not CHOOSE to take another job you stay w/i your school or district.
If you do not like your school/district apply elsewhere as I did the first time around and try to secure a position.
I HTH please feel free to ask me any other questuions--I know I kind of rambled
