We learned the song in elementary school! They are in alphabetical order and I remember yelling NEW YORK!

I also had to know the 50 states AND their capitals for the 5th grade! I can name the 50 states if I wrote them down, and unfortunately the capitals I didnt retain all of them...but I probably do 30-50% of them!

if I write them down I can see what i've forgotten. I don't think i could just say them out loud. Pressure!!!
But I start where I've lived, states I've visited, states I've driven through, then any neighbor to that state. Then places of interest (like my sister dating a guy in Kentucky - I'm always forgetting that state), then places I'll probably never visit from lack of interest or availablity (idaho, alaska, wyoming), places I want to go (washington, oregon, ohio, mackinac, mi)

Haha I actually start with New England, then go alphabetically from there. I'm not well-traveled enough to just do the states I've been to! lol!
I actually got New Mexico before giving up and cheating, but we left out Montana and Oregon!

Yes I just tried it.... I got 48 right away but had to think about it a lot to get the last 2. What helps me is picturing the map of the US.

dh and i play this game all the time..we get out paper n pens and see who can do it first ..also do it with naming all major 4 pro sports teams

If you know where each state is geographically, it's easy to do it that way.

I was either not taught it or somehow blocked it out of my mind b/c I hated geography in grade school. Still not interested in it, as ignorant as that sounds.
