can you please help me find a good article on the car seat mirrors being unsafe?
I know many people use them I never did. My friends newborn hated it for some reason and once she stopped the baby is great in the car.Her MIL insists they are puting the baby in danger. I know I have read somewhere that they colud possibly be dangerous in an accident can you help me find a good article to send to my friend? TIA

when we first had our infant seat installed into the car by our township, we had 2 mirrors that we received at the shower, and they suggested we not use them as they are the first things to come lose and become a flying object in the event of an accident. so we returned them and its been fine.

the one that I used had a solid loop that would handle well over 50 lbs of force (probably much more, even). I pulled the headrest out of the seat, put the loop through the post, then put the headrest back on.

I don't know of any articles, but I have never used one and my kids are perfectly fine.

Re: can you please help me find a good article on the car seat mirrors being unsafe?
This is a thread started by a CPST which shows how SHARP those mirrors are when they break. Within that thread is a link to a second thread which discusses an actual crash in which one came loose
http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=126628
It's going to be one of two things which happen in a collision:
1 - the mirror comes loose and hits someone. An 8oz mirror in a 40mph crash will hit someone with the force of 20lbs. Force = speed X weight.. 8 x 40 = 240 oz.. (20lbs).
2. the mirror stays put and the childs face smashes against it. Now you're dealing with numerous lacerations to the face and possibly eye injuries as well.
