Can you recommend a book that left a "Lasting Impression"

Lately every time I try to get into a new "bestseller" book, I lose interest after 15 pages-
or
I read it to the end and come to the conclusion that it was SO not worth the read!
Are there any books that you can honestly say "moved" you?
My two are:
"The Five People You Meet in Heaven"
"The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success"

The time traveler's wife.

Loved it!

Also the lovely bones, and all Wally Lamb books.

That is all I can think of off the top of my head...

Definitely agree with this!

Also Joan Didion's "A Year of Magical Thinking" was very powerful.

If you are a dog lover, "Marley & Me" by John Grogan will make you laugh and cry out loud.

I loved Marley & Me.

Also read year of Magical Thinking. it was very well written and my heart went out to her on the deaths of her husband and daughter, but while reading it I kind of felt like she was portraying herself as the only woman to become a widow and no one else could feel the pain and sorrow she was experieincing. Hope that doesn't sound too mean. Chat Icon

Gracelin O'Malley by Ann Moore - totally opened my eyes about the potato famine in Ireland, I had no idea. This book also sent me into reading all kinds of books about that time period.

A Year in Provence by Peter Mayle - I can reread this book over and over again.

Marley and Me - If you love animals, you will defiinitely cry over this one.

The Kite Runner - Another book that really opened my eyes about Afghanistan and the way lives have changed there.

Another vote for Marley and Me - absolutely, hands down my all time favorite book.

I know people who aren't dog lovers and still loved it - just such a sweet, lovely story.

Re: Can you recommend a book that left a "Lasting Impression"

- The World According to Garp ~ John Irving
- The Unbearable Lightness of Being ~ Milan Kundera
- Henry & June ~ Anais Nin
- Sexus ~ Henry Miller
- The Red Tent ~ Anita Diamant
- Tropic of Cancer ~ Henry Miller
- The Bell Jar ~ Sylvia Plath

A little less traditional:

- Selected Poems of e.e. cummings
- The Giving Tree ~ Shel Silverstein

edited b/c it was "Tropic of Cancer" not "Tropic of Capricorn". *I'm* a Capricorn (and while it was one of his books it wasn't the one I meant). Chat Icon

Re: Can you recommend a book that left a "Lasting Impression"

A Woman of Substance by Barbara Taylor Bradford.

It's the first book in a series of books. I think it was originally published in 1979. The first part of the book is a little tough to get through because it's written in the dialect of the time (late 1800s). It's a big book, upwards of 900 pages, but sooo worth it.

I like to read books in order, so I went to the library and took this book out and proceeded to read every book in the series thereafter.

I loved the characters, the storylines, imagry. Just amazing. I love to read, and I loved being taken away to a different place and a different time.

The last book in the series was published in Jan 2006, so the series has been long-lasting one.

I LOVED both Wally Lamb books and my Sister's Keeper. Glass Castle was also really good.
