can you teach one grade below your certification?
For example, I am 7-12 certified. I was under the impression that I could teach one grade above and below my certification area. Doesn't that mean I can teach 6th as well?

You can teach 1 year out of licence. I'm certified B-6 and had to teach 7th ELA a few years ago. This was in NYC, don't know if the same rules apply on LI.

You're supposed to receive the Grade 5-6 extension Search http://eservices.nysed.gov/teach/certhelp/CertRequirementHelp.do for "Classroom Teacher Extensions." So, if you're 7-12 cert is in SS, then you'll look for requirements for SS Grade 5-6 extension. I believe in NYC they may not enforce this but in LI they do.

I called BOCES regarding an extention in 5-6, but they said they got rid of 5-6 and 5-9 extentions. I would have to get my 1-6 certification, which would require me to take two 3-credit courses and then take the Multi-subject CST 1-6. However, BOCES mentioned something about teaching one grade above and below your certification area. I taught 6th grade last year in my current school (NYC school) and never thought anything of it.
Now that I am in the process of getting a LI job, and they are interested in moving forward with hiring me, this whole certification issue came up. They want me to teach 6th and 7th grade, but aren't sure if I can teach 6th with my certifications. It sounds as though they are willing to hire me if I agree to start the process of obtaining the appropriate certification in the Fall.

I had no idea NYSED was getting rid of the middle school extensions. Obviously, it's most important for this LI district to send you to the Board of Education for approval so just do whatever they say to get there! I know that in NYC they let secondary certified people teach 6th grade but Long Island usually has elementary certified teachers doing 6th grade because the elementary license is grades 1-6. I would continue interviewing on LI until everything is finalized with this district.
