Cancel or Go?

We are schedule to go on a cruise next week aboard the Norwegian Breakaway. Just found out that two children drown in the adult pool. One did not survive (4 year old boy). The other child is expected to survive. Don't know all the details but it is a tragedy nevertheless.

I'm so upset over the accident. Can't stop thinking about it!! Not sure how I can enjoy the trip with my family while thinking about the drowning. We have trip insurance and will read the policy to see if we can cancel.

So.....would you go?

That is awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't blame you for being hesitant but I think I would still go. Were they siblings?

ETA: I went on the Gem a couple of years ago. Find out if the pool has a shallow end. The "family pool" was 5 feet at the shallowest. It was nearly impossible to enjoy with the kids, especially since I am 5'2". DH and I had to hang on to the edge and hold the kids. Children who were clearly great swimmers had a great time. My kids were two and three and were scared to death. Ask if there is a place for adults to stand and hold their children. I know I said I would not go on the Gem again only for the pool. I would consider the Breakaway only if the pool was at 3 feet in the shallow end.

It's a terrible tragedy but I wouldn't even consider not going. The pools are not monitored by lifeguards which means parents need to actually pay attention to their children and I can't even tell you how many times I've seen kids go unattended on cruises. As long as you're paying attention to your children, watching them, going in the pool with them, they should be fine.

The adult pool on the Breakaway is deep and that is probably one of the reasons why it's for adults only. I could barely reach and I'm 5'3. Unfortunately there are some parents who want to hang out with the adults and completely ignore the signs that say the pools are for adults only. They have kiddie pools and kiddie areas for a reason.

BUT I would still go I think. We were just on the Breakaway in December, and there is a great splash area for younger kids- with an ankle deep pool, little slides, and sponge bob characters that spray water. They also had a pool for older kids, too that was a little smaller than the adult pool.
like another poster said, the adult pool is labeled the adult pool for a reason. Younger kids should not be in there. unfortunately some adults just don't keep an eye on their kids or think the signs don't apply to them. As long as you keep a close eye on your kids, I'm sure everything will be fine and you'll have a great time!

How incredibly awful!! :( There was another drowning on a ship pool not that long ago as well. I don't understand why people don't supervise their children. I think I would probably still go, but I would probably not go in the adult pool. I think it would just be upsetting to swim where someone died recently.

Re: Cancel or Go?

THis happened to us when we went on DIsney Dream last year. Not long before we went a little boy drowned, before we went I was reading his blog (well parents) and it was horrible, he survived but obviously had a long road ahead. This accident was on the Disney Fantasy

Honestly as much as I felt horrible for that family, it never occurred to me to not go on our vacation. We watched our kids like hawks, one of us always had eyes on each child. Very rarely did we leave both kids with one parent if there was swimming involved.

As horrible as this is, its something that could happen anywhere. Kids drowned in pools more often than I care to think, and the beach etc, but we still swim and go to the beach, its about taking hte proper precautions....

Go, enjoy your vacation, make wonderful memories with your family!

I would still go of course! If anything, it will make you more aware of your surroundings which is a good thing for everyone aboard!

I think the question is was it because the parents left the kid unattended of did the kids camp ? I was just on the same boat the past weekend. It is huge. I just think kids have to be watched like hawks .

Thank you for the responses. They have been helpful. We will definitely be watching the boys like hawks like we normally do. They are strong swimmers but will not be out of our sight. We have more adults than children going so that is a plus.

I heard the children were siblings. They were supposed found by other passengers. I'm waiting for the full story to come out before passing judgement.

Such a sad tragedy that I hope can be avoided in the future by Norwegian hiring lifeguards. I know Disney has lifeguards and hope the others follow their lead.

I agree

The article stated they found them in the morning?? So did they sneak out of the cabin??

I don't *think* so, just because the kids were found in the morning. Though, don't they usually put the nets on the pool at night? I know they used to do that on the Dawn....

But it's true- there are signs EVERYWHERE saying that the large pool is for adults and there are no lifeguards on duty. It's a tragedy, but I don't think NCL was at fault at all.

Not sure. I heard they were found by other passengers and not NCL staff. The passenger performed CPR until medical staff arrived.

Of course! Just feeling a bit sad since the boys are close in age to my own. We are most likely going since this trip has been planned for over a year. Hate to disappoint my own children by canceling.

Disney does not have lifeguards on their ships. At least not on the Dream, and not as of September 2013. I keep seeing this referenced, but I never saw a single lifeguard. There are attendants, but not lifeguards.

Someone stated they were in the pool when the kids drowned, so I don't think that's the case. Drowning doesn't look like it does on TV, so the people swimming around them had no idea what was going on I'm sure.

Sounds like they were added right after your cruise. My friend was on the Dream in late Oct and they definitely had lifeguards. Dream and Magic were first followed by Fantasy and Wonder in November.

Chat Icon Your kids will probably be even safer because you are even more aware of it now.

I was recently on a Royal Caribbean cruise & that pool had bar stools that overlooked the pool & there was family that we were pretty sure did not move from that all day & went through several buckets of Coronas while their daughter played in the pool. They were watching her, but also, drinking & involved in their own conversation with a group. Made me so nervous. Chat Icon

I found out they do have them now, but not at each pool on the ship. Lifeguard or not though, nothing takes the place of parental supervision. Hard lesson to learn, poor boys Chat Icon

While this is an awful, awful tragedy, and my heart goes out to the family of those children, I agree with the other posters and would take your vacation as planned.

On a side note, even though you said you have insurance, you would most likely need to claim and show proof of a covered reason (severe illness, death, etc) in order to have your trip refunded.

Re: Cancel or Go?

I would go for the reasons others stated but my goodness- how horrible.

When you are in the moment with your family you will enjoy your trip.

Say a prayer if you're inclined and maybe do a random act of kindness so something good comes out of it.

Cancel or Go?

I was on the Breakaway last year and it was wonderful and I would not cancel your trip. The situation that happened today is terribly sad but I really don't think it had anything to do with the cruise itself. Pools are everywhere and you just need to watch your children, whether on land or ship.

Disney has lifeguards now because a boy almost drowned a few months back. They put instituted them after the incident. Lifeguards or not you still need to watch your kids. With hundreds of kids on the boat a lifeguard can't watch them all.

Why would you not go? It is a horrific accident and yes, very terrible, and very sad. But an accident could occur anytime anywhere. This could have occurred in any hotel (did you know disney quiet pools have no life guard, and many hotel pools do not). I am sure there are many places that have had tragedies you might never know about. In most of the cruise drownings the parents were not supervising their kids ( not sure if this is the case here or not). It would just make me more vigilant in watching my children. Go, be thankful you have a wonderful family to travel with.

Would you sail on disney? They have had drownings.

Disney added life guards to their ships I think I read after their drowning. I want to say about 2 months or so ago. They are the only ones who have life guards. There were several long threads on cruise critic about this topic.

Sure I would still sail on Disney! I very thankful to have a amazing life. I'm well aware that tragedies happen everyday. I'm incredible sad about this tragedy and just can't imagine enjoying myself on a ship where a child just died. Bad karma? It's too soon for me! The rest of the family still wants to go.
