CAPE question.. for those who have one, or know about them..
Hi everyone... I have a question - What is the actual definition of a "Cape"? Does that always mean slanted ceilings in the upstairs, and no attic? Thanks in advance.. and happy friday :)

always check google:
as per wikipedia A Cape Cod is a style of house originating in New England in the 17th century. It is traditionally characterized by a low, broad frame building, generally a story and a half high, with a steep, perfectly pitched roof with end gables and a large central chimney.
The Cape Cod style (and in turn its Colonial Revival descendant of the 1930s–50s) originated with the colonists who came from England to New England. They used the English house with a hall and parlor as a model, adapting this design with local materials to best protect against New England's notoriously stormy weather. Over the next several generations emerged a one- to one-and-a-half-story house with wooden shutters and clapboard or shingle exterior.

Colonial Revival Capes (1930s–50s) Revivalist Cape Cod houses have the chimney at one end of the living room on the side of the house.

This is sort of what my parents' house looks like. And it has an attic. Or, more technically, a crawl space upstairs. It runs along the whole back of the upper floor.

hmmm... so you CAN have storage above the bedrooms. I have yet to see a Cape with attic storage, so I was thinking that maybe by definition they don;t have attics. that;s a REALLY cute house.

Like I said, it's more of a crawl space (we just always called it an attic). It runs behind the wall of the each of the 2 bedrooms. There's a pretty decent amount of space back there too. Just gotta watch out for banging your head on the sloped roof!

Re: CAPE question.. for those who have one, or know about them..
I bought a Cape - not sure of the technical term as per Wiki b/c I have 2 FULL floors. The second floor is called a full stand-up attic. When we finish the upstairs we'll be able to put 2-3 bedrooms and 1 bath - we'll lose a lot of attic storage space (what will remain will be storage in the eaves and perhaps a crawl space unless we have vaulted ceilings.
My house...(excuse the antenna - that was promptly removed once we closed LOL)

We have a cape that's dormered in the back. So we have a full upstairs with 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. Behind both bedrooms there is a storage space (eaves). There is so much room back there that we're eventually going to use some of the space to turn the bedroom closet into a walk in closet ( ).

this is pretty much what my parents house looks like and we had a crawl space upstairs above my bedroom. but we also had a HUGE basement with plenty of storage space and my dad built a shelf in the garage for additional space.

Re: CAPE question.. for those who have one, or know about them..
you can always tell a typical long island cape...2 bedrooms on the top floor, 2 bedrooms on the main floor (but alot of people convert one of the downstairs bedrooms into a dining room or den).
although some colonials look like capes, you can always tell when a house is a colonial cause they have all their bedrooms upstairs.

Re: CAPE question.. for those who have one, or know about them..
We just bought a cape (pic is in my avatar). Downstairs, we have 2 br, 1 full bath, living/dining room and kitchen. Upstairs we have 2 br & 1 full bath. We just have a crawl space, the ceilings are really low.
My aunt has a cape, their second floor was never finished though so it's a full/huge stand up attic.

I think ours is considered a cape with dormers. We have full rooms upstairs and we also have an attic that you can stand up in, so I guess it all depends on how big the house is. Here is a pic of ours:

We have this too, but our house is called a farm ranch or expanded ranch. Long ranch bottom with a cape top. We only have crawlspace storage along teh front and back of the house.

Its considered 1 and 1/2 stories because the sloped roof reduces the standing room of the second floor. You can only stand in roughly 1/2 the space of the second floor (before hitting your head )

Re: CAPE question.. for those who have one, or know about them..
We are currently selling a cape and buying another one. The one we are selling now is one bedroom downstairs and one large bedroom upstairs. Obviously we love capes. Both capes have a lot of storage in the eaves on the second floor.
