car accident-what to do with car seats
So we were hit from behind today at a light by a drunk driver. My DH and 2 duaghters were all in the car. Spent the early evening at Peconic Bay Hospital out in Riverhead. I'm ******- this girl could have really hurt someone!! She got arrested at least! Anyway- question is do I have to purchase new car seats? I don't see any stress marks on DD's car seats. I'm sure someones insurance will cover it. Even if not, if I'm supposed to I will!! Most important thing to me- my babies

Yes, and your car insurance may even pay for their replacements - so call them and ask what you need to do to get them to either pay for them or reimburse you. I hope everyone feels better.

Re: car accident-what to do with car seats
Replace them. I was hit from the rear when my child was not in the car. I did a lot of research and concluded that it was safe to keep the carseat but it would not have been if my child was in it at the time of impact. My husband did some paperwork to try to be covered for a new one. We were denied and did not appeal. The child being in the seat is an entirely different story, though.
I'm so sorry this happened. If my incident was caused my a drunk driver, I would have reacted so differently. In my situation, the guy was not drunk and he felt terrible about hitting me. His concern kept me calmer than I might have been.

Definately replace them. Call your insurance and find out what they can do. Explain the circumstances.

Yes, call your insurance and ask how to replace them. I had to buy a new one and send my insurance company the receipt. The sent me a check immediately.
You should also cut the straps on the old car seats so no one uses them. You would never know if something was wrong w/the seats until it was too late.

Insurance should reimburse you and no matter what, dispose of the seats, honestly, I'd cut the straps so no one can take them!

Re: car accident-what to do with car seats
The seats do need to be replaced. As far as insurance, you place the seats on the claim. Insurance will cover the cost of replacement of the SAME or equivelent priced seat - you cannot upgrade the seat.
DO NOT throw out the seat unless instructed to by the insurance company. Most insurance companies want the seats returned to them to make sure you have replaced the seats and are not useing them in another vehicle.

We were rear-ended twice this year. We got rid of those car seats, and bought new ones. I still have yet to get my money back from my insurance though.
I wish I had asked you girls, because now I'm upset that I didn't cut the straps, I hope nobody took them
Edited for typo

Re: car accident-what to do with car seats
Thanks for all your replys.. DH is calling insurance company this morning. I will definately get new seats either way if they pay for them or not. I have the Britax Marathon and planned on having it for a while so thats a definate replacement. DD #2 is almost out of the infant carrier so should I replace it or buy the next seat that would be the same price? Never thought to cut the straps. I will do that soon after.
