Car dealership vent

DH & I are in the market for a new SUV for me. I am currently driving a 2005 Honda Pilot with all the bells and whistles. We put $3000 down and were paying $350 a month. We paid it off last year, so I'm basically driving it free until April.

DH inquired on a few websites for prices. We liked the Toyota Highlander so we went to a dealership to discuss. We met with a nice enough guy, told him we definately needed a NAV system, that was the one thing the car had to have. We both have excellent credit. We are willing to put down $3500 but wanted to keep the monthly payments between $350 and $450, as my hubby has a fully loaded G35x that he pays $530 a month ($2500 down). The guy comes back and tells us its going to be $679 a month with $4000 down Chat Icon . We said no, he goes to check another #, comes back and said you can get a sport edition, no nav $3000 down for $650 a month, yea no thanks. WHY would we pay more for a Toyota that has nothing then we do for a fully loaded Infiniti?

Now Yesterday DH gets a phone call from another dealer in that same dealership, tells him with NO MONEY down he can get the Limited for $600 a monthChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

DH called him (the 2nd dealer) on it, the guy was totally flustered and said well umm if thats what ummm he ummm quoted you then thats the price, this price is for well-qualified buyers, DH exploded and said well you need to check your co-workers report because both me and my wife have credit scores in the mid 700's, is it because my last name is spanish that you think I'm not a "qualified buyer"
The guy hung up my DH.

I totally understand that they need to make their money, but maybe the whole company should be on the same page.

Re: Car dealership vent

ack!

First of all. NEVER negotiate on monthly payment. Always on price of the car.

go onto Edmunds.com and price your car and do the math. That's what your payment will be and should be. Don't pay over invoice.

Good luck.

Hey Stacey,

Do you have triple A? If youn do, then ask to speak to the triple A rep at the dealership. You would be very surprised in the price difference.

I am sorry you are dealing with such shaddiness

Re: Car dealership vent

There are definitely Toyota dealers that I wouldn't deal with.

I was fortunate that my experience was a positive one. Yes, yes, the haggling and negotiating happened but I expected that.

I paid what I deemed fair and based on the invoice price.

If you go prepared, then there's no reason to have issues.

Know your credit and what you want to pay and don't budge. Let them know you are serious and are willing to decide then and there. That's how I have been able to get the deals I want.

Toyota gave us a ridiculous price quote on the Highlander w/ 5k down. We walked out and probably will go Chevy Tahoe or GM Acadia.

Re: Car dealership vent

that is why we didnt get a highlander way over priced. quoted 500's for a highlander with leather and moonroof. we leased a 4 runner for 364 a month with 2400 down 3 years ago and thats suppose to be worth more than the highlander. not worth the money imo. we just got a mazda cx9 totally didnt think we would go look at it but drove it and loved it. more in our range and its has a 3rd row. good luck to you.

Re: Car dealership vent

We had a bad experience at a Toyota dealership too.

We were negotiating the purchase price and the dealer was negotiating the financing terms. We kept saying that we'll discuss financing after we discuss the price but the dealer would not relent. He kept coming back with different monthly payments, loan terms and down payments. After about an hour of working with this joker, we said "you're not getting it" and walked away.
