Car question...since people are asking

Ok..so we need 2 cars total and right now am leasing one (lease is up in June). All of the financial advice magazines/gurus, etc. (ie. my favorite Suze) say to get a used car (2-3 years) since cars lose most of their value during that time. There is a part of me that just really wants a new car (the other will be a train car, so to speak). What are your opinions? Am I being a brat for wanting a new car instead of a gently used one?

Re: Car question...since people are asking

I'm a big fan of certified pre-owned. We have 2 of them bought over a pretty short period of time. When you get the car it is immaculate.

Re: Car question...since people are asking

if you can afford a new car and it fits in your budget, then get a new car.

Not always is the best choice the most practical. I depends on your situation.

Re: Car question...since people are asking

get the car that you most like and can afford, whether it be new or cert preowned.

if you like a $$ car the most, and only want to shell out $, if the cert pre owned program allows for it, there's no problem with it.

most come with some kind of warranty nowadays, so you have some protection as well.

new car would be the best, but I prefer to buy a car 1-2 years old to save some $$

Re: Car question...since people are asking

when my lease is up I am buying a pre-owned

I would rather let someone else take the hit in depreciation

Re: Car question...since people are asking

We bought a certified pre-owned 1 year old car and I love it. Before we used to lease. My payments now are much lower than if I would have bought new and once it's paid off it's all mine.

As soon as you drive a new car off the lot it loses value...might as well get a good deal for one that is almost brand new but costs alot less.

Re: Car question...since people are asking

Both of our cars were bought from dealerships, returned from 2 - 3 year leases.

Its a little less exciting to get a used car than a new car, but financially it made more sense.

Also, we financed them, and now own them outright. Its a very good feeling to be able to free up some Chat Icon in the budget when they're paid off! Chat Icon

Ditto. We buy all our cars 2-3 years old. It's just wasted money buying it new.
