Re: Car repair question....
It shouldn't be much, they will probably just plug it. Don't let them talk you into replacing it.
Do a quick internet search

Re: Car repair question....
For a quick fix, there is something called "muffler tape". It uses the heat of the exhaust to melt the tape to the pipe. Half my exhaust on my first car in high school was made with that stuff...
Really, though, it depends on the problem. If it's on the muffler, they may just replace that, since it's pretty easy to get to, and really the best solution. If your pipes are clamped together and not welded, it should be easy to remove the one section and put in a new section. Even if it's welded, it's not that hard to just cut out the bad part and put in a new piece. You shouldn't need an entire new system.

Where is the leak in the exhaust system? If it is on the tail pipe all you have to do is slide on old can over it if you cannot get the tape.
Def not an $800 issue.

I agree. My dad had an old peanut can on an exhaust pipe for years on an old car
My mechanic once had to fix a hole and he soldered it. It was a few bucks for materials (like less than $10) and one hour of labor.
