Car Salesman Denies Service To CNBC’s Becky Quick, Makes Mistake Of A Lifetime
So a seven-months pregnant woman walks into a Toyota dealership. And she asks to see a Toyota Sienna, because she’s pregnant and those are massive cars and massive cars make sense for some families. But wait — the saleman won’t show her the Sienna. Instead, he asks her where her husband is.
What’s a ticked off pregnant lady to do in this situation? Grasp for a barbed comeback, turn on her heels and storm out of that place? Well, yea. And then maybe sit at home and stew about it.
That is, unless you’re a high-profile reporter for CNBC. Then you write about it. And you put the whole encounter in print (Fortune) and online. And you make that car salesman feel very, very stupid.
That’s exactly what “Squawk Box” host Becky Quick did, when she relayed this doozy of a story in a report titled “Car Salesman: Still Sexist, Still Stupid”:
I walked to the front desk and asked to have someone show me the Sienna. A salesman came right out and introduced himself to the man who happened to be standing behind me. After the bystander made clear that he wasn’t my husband, the salesman asked me where my husband was — still without introducing himself or asking my name. The sales rep then went on to respond to questions I asked about the Sienna by looking at my husband and talking to him, until my husband told him to talk to me. When the guy took me to his desk to take down my information, he asked me for my home phone number and followed up with: “Obviously you don’t have a work phone.” Obviously!
Note to car salesmen: maybe try not to insult one of the country’s most visible financial T.V. news reporters. Or, you know, try not being a total jackass.

Wow, what an azz-hole. Good for her for putting this out there. Sometimes I feel like we've come so far as a culture and forget there are still jerks out there like this.

Good for her I had a similar experience at an audi dealer in huntington...my DH went into the dealership by himself and then I met him in the parking lot with the kids...the salesman came out...my DH said "this is my wife and kids" and he walked right past me without even acknowledging I was there I was fuming...needless to say we didn't buy anything from him.

I had a similar experience when we were shopping for cars last year. I happened to be on maternity leave and toting around an infant. I had such trouble with getting people to take me serious and talk money with me. Which was even more annoying because I am totally the money manager in our household. And I make a lot more than DH does! Grrr.

Another case where you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
When I was 20 years old, I had an insurance payment plus winnings from a contest and I had almost $15,000 IN MY POCKET to buy a car. Idiots would not even entertain me because I was a female and young. Little did they know

Horrible!!! I went car shopping with my father when I was younger and I refused to buy a car from any salesperson who wouldn't speak directly to me....and there were plenty of them. Makes me so angry!!

I went to a jeep dealership in north shore nassau county and was slammed by an older salesman. Totally mocked my career and belittled what my role must be as a woman. Even said "I hate all female----insert career----" i am sure there are some good salesmen out there but they are hard to find.

I let insecure salespeople talk to DH about the car and I just listen.
Then when it's time to negotiate, DH stands back and lets me crush them like a bug.
Been there done that...glad this guy was exposed.

I had a very similar experience. My grandmother was buying me a new car when I was in college. Went with my brother to the Saturn dealership in Hempstead when I was home on Thanksgiving break. I knew that I wanted a Saturn or a Honda. This was when Saturn was relatively new, had a zillion commercials on, and were patting themselves on the back with how "down to earth" and "different" they were. So, here come two youngish college-aged "kids" and the salesman would barely give us the time of day. Questioned me when I told him I wanted a sunroof..."Does it HAVE to have a sunroof," while rolling his eyes and wouldn't let me test drive because he said it they were too busy. Walked out of the dealership, went home, called the Saturn cust service number, tore the salesman a new you-know-what (I made a point to remember his name) and bought a Honda.
Azzholes!!!

Re: Car Salesman Denies Service To CNBC’s Becky Quick, Makes Mistake Of A Lifetime
I had a similar experience both times I went to buy a car. I still can't believe how stupid people are.
I'm the one that does the research on the car, the pricing, the options & knows exactly what I want to pay.
When I was in my 20s & went with my dad, he told every salesperson to talk to me because I made the final decision. We walked out of 6 dealerships before I found my car at the price I wanted.
When I bought a car recently, they would talk to DH first & he would be clear I was the one they should talk to. Every salesperson I encountered would approached & would say "Do you have someone here with you today?" The day I bought the car, it was my mom & I.
Stupid, stupid boys.

i recently bought a car and at one dealership the salesman couldn't wrap his head around the idea that i was purchasing the car and DH would not be listed as an owner.

Re: Car Salesman Denies Service To CNBC’s Becky Quick, Makes Mistake Of A Lifetime
When I was younger i walked into a high end car dealership and had to drive my 17 year old sister's beat up car because I had already sold mine privately.
The 1st saleman didn't take me very seriously and than when another person whispered what I drove in driving the guy guy down right rude. He asked me how i planned to pay for the car and not too expect the trade in to cover much and that financing at a young age was very hard. i told him I would be paying in cash no financing and he told me to stop wasting his time.
I went back 4 days later driving an even higher model than I was originally looking at with my Boyfriend and 2 friends each parked next to me in new cars. That was alway the plan to get a good deal and than have them drop the price more because we were all looking to buy. He looked like he was going to pass out and die. Stupid A$$!!!
