Car Seat Installation
So we just had the car seats installed in our cars and the guy who did it said not to use anything that did not come with the car seat (ex: Bundle Me's) and he also said not to put Mirrors up so that we can see the baby.
What are your thoughts on this?

Re: Car Seat Installation
While I'm sure it DOES compromise the safety of the seat since it adds extra bulk, I think Bundle Me's are ok. I use one.
I agree with the mirror thing.

I would think that he HAS to tell you that....I think most people do it though...probably a liability thing....

I agree. DH is a police officer and he just got certified and trained in car seat installaton and he said the same thing about the "extras". Bundle Me's are OK, since it provides a blanket like covering. He said the postioners are not recommended. There aren't enough studies done to say if they're good, or bad.
It's all about the crash testing and what will or will not be a projectile object.

I agree with all of this, but why not be able to use the mirror..it attaches to the car...not the infant seat...hmmmm

He said in case of an accident and the mirror comes off and can hurt the baby. He also said that it causes more accidents bc parents are constantly looking back at the baby and not fully paying attention to driving.

Re: Car Seat Installation
I work at a hospital and they also advocate against the bundle me's. I'm not a mom, so excuse my mis use of words...but our installer did say there is something else that goes around the entire car seat that does not effect the buckles that is ok for use. The installer here is a NICU nurse who actually has had articles published. She went through a lot of it w/ my sister when she had her son.

Yea, I think I'm going to return my bundle me's (although I only got the Lite one since it will be summer) I'd rather be safe then sorry and a blanket will be fine to cover up the little one.

I've heard this about the mirrors, that they could be a projectile. But my feeling is, anything loose in your car has the potential to become a projectile in the event of an accident...your purse in the back seat, a bag of groceries in the back seat, etc... I'm going to use a mirror, since it does attach to the seat. I had not planned on using a Bundle Me.

Re: Car Seat Installation
The issue with the mirrors attached to the seat is that they face the baby. So if the carseat for some reason raises and "bumps" into the seat due to impact in a car accident, the baby might bumped his body/head into the mirror.

Re: Car Seat Installation
And any of those head support things can cause baby to overheat since they release heat through their heads.
I was told if really necessary to roll up 2 dipaers or similar and put one on each SIDE of the baby's head to keep it from wobbling - but that most babies do not need this.
The mirrors can become projectiles in a crash - those are th eones you mount in the front of the car.
Why should we need to see baby at every moment? Better off concentrating on the road and other drivers. If the baby has a problem, they will let you know.

Re: Car Seat Installation
I just bought a mirror today that attaches to the tether in the back seat. It's not real glass and is soft cushion so I'm not concerned at all about her hitting her head on it.

I know that is ridiculous and to say that parents will look back there and get into accidents, I think it is worse not having one and turning around or trying to touch the baby in the backseat.
If it is secured properly it is safer then having your pocketbook, etc in the car.
I don't agree with the bundleme either. I used it all winter long and was sooo happy I had it. A blanket is def not as heavy as the bundleme for the very cold days.

Re: Car Seat Installation
Well, I really bought it more for her entertainment, since it has music and plush toys on it. It's the rainforest one from FP and it's the only one I've found thus far that attaches to the tether in case anyone is interested.

I have a similair one and plan to use it, because I wil probably have a higher chance of an accident, TRYING to see him WITHOUT the mirror then looking in it.

Re: Car Seat Installation
I think the mirror is the one parents clip on to their own visor, to see in the back - not the mirror placed on the headrest in front of the baby.

Re: Car Seat Installation
We were told the same thing. DH refused to let me keep the Bundle Me (try putting two huge winter coats on preemies every time you go somewhere ) and the head rests. Well I won the head rest fight and also installed the mirrors.

Re: Car Seat Installation
I didn't want a mirror for the same reason- because it could go flying in an accident. Also, the officer who installed our seats mentioned water/soda bottles and warned us about them too.
I also felt that I didn't need the distraction of the mirror- I want to have my eyes on the road, but I am a very nervous driver.

Re: Car Seat Installation
i also heard that if you use those sun protector screens on the windows it should be the kind that just stick on (like colorforms) and not the ones with suction cups, because they could fly off too and injure the baby.
