Car service adding a 25 % service fee..sandy related.
I use an NYC. Car service for my boss and used them last week. This evening i got an email from this company stating that they are adding a 25% service fee to all trips made during this past week to make it up to their drivers who had to navigate through the storm debris etc to make the trips. They said the money will go directly to the driver.i am really annoyed by this and thinks its all wrong. Firstly if they wanted to add this fee they should have advised us before we booked the trip and not as an after thought..secondly if you want to thank your drivers for driving in not so great conditions then you the company president should reward them as you see fit..thirdly i honestly dont think any of these drivers put their lives at risk doing runs to the airports or around manhattan etc..again this is a car service and not a taxi cab service..am i way off base here for being annoyed at this?

I think thats BS and I am waiting for the fuel surcharges to start.
i took car service this morning. I haven't seen the final bill so I will be curious if they charge something similar.

If this is an after the fact charge, I think that is BS. If it is notifying you that for the next week, they are doing this, then I think its fair.
however, seeing the livery drivers on these gas lines, the hiked up fuel costs etc. these guys are spending a lot of their time that they would be spending driving people, waiting, and extra money that normally would be their take home pay on gas.
depending on how the car service company works, a lot of the time the drivers get a portion of the fee, plus tip, and they pay for the gas in the car. if they spend half their shift waiting and are spending more on gas, either they're making much much less than normal, or the customer has to pay more.

I think that given the circumstances, it is probably warranted, and I'm not surprised that they're doing it. Is it RIGHT? Who knows. If it's not a ton of money, I wouldn't get so worked up over it.

I just dont think its fair or just to tack on a fee after the fact. If the fare was $150 then the charge will be 25% of that plus the driver would have been tipped already but the passenger. This was for last week before the gas mania started.

I would think that an after the fact charge is illegal as it changed the terms of the contract, unless there is some clause that provides for additional surcharges for natural disasters. With that said, I would have expected notice of the charge before I used the service. I personally would fight the charges and I would report them to the AG for trying to price gouge. As for going forward, I could see them wanting to do it and you have a choice whether or not to use their services.
