Career Changes
If you could change your career what would you want to do and what do you do now?
Since we are moving back to NY in June, I know getting a teaching job is going to be near impossible.
So until this goes away, what options do I have?
I have been considering a career change but I'm not quite sure what I would be interested in. I'd love to hear your responses!

Re: Career Changes
What else is in your background?
Did you know that many companies have a training & education department so you could be a Corporate Learning Manager.

Re: Career Changes
I always say--Don't make a permanent decision based on a temporary situation.
If you want to be a teacher--go for it! People will retire, go on leave etc.
It won't be like this forever

Re: Career Changes
I'm an actor and love my job but somedays I wish I had picked something else.
I'd probably have become a photographer and journalist ala Nicholas Kristof
ETA: What things are you interested in? What passions do you have besides teaching? I think asking those questions is a good way to start

Re: Career Changes
I don't really see it as temporary. It took me 3 years to get my job that I had on LI only to get laid off 2 years later.
I can't imagine always experiencing the ups and downs of obtaining tenure, passing budgets and hoping the administrators like you.
My bachelor's is in managerial accounting. Bascially I was an accounting major till my last undergrad semester and decided I didn't want to do it, so instead of finishing my last 2 accounting classes, I took 2 management courses.
I was always interested in law and wanted to go to law school, but its too late in my life (yea I know its not) but I can't imagine laying out that much more money for school when I already owe $50,000 for my masters and bachelors.

I think whatever you decide to do it has to be something you will enjoy. Otherwise what a waste of time and $$! How about something in the law profession if you feel that becoming a lawyer seems to daunting at this point? A paralegal, legal librarian or legal secretary?

Would those just be certificate programs? I know Hofstra and Suffolk both have a certificate in Paralegal studies.

I'm not sure but they might be! Might as well call the school and ask. Good luck

Paralegal studies would be a certificate program (I did it about 15 years ago in NJ). Legal librarian would need a Masters (MLS), although I've also seen job listings that want a JD as well. I don't think you need a specific degree for a legal secretary.
