i'm a licenced clinical social worker (LCSW)
I have recently been appointed Director of a Mental Health Crisis Clinic
I don't love my job AT ALL, it is very dangerous, the population I work with are very psyhotic. I also work with the Red Cross mental health disaster services and worked at ground zero as well as the piers at the Family Assistance center within 24 hrs of the disaster and was down there until about January 2002.
I would love to go into medicine and will be pursuing a degree in nursing in hopes of oneday becoming a Nurse Practitioner.
I know you said you dont like your job but to me that sounds amazing....I would love to do something like that - sounds like you make a difference!

Re: Careers: What do you do for a living and do you love it?
I am a Cosmetic Chemist. I formulate skin care products for some very well-known companies.. I have seen some of "my" products mentioned on this website actually I like what I do, but as I move-up I am starting to hate it, especially the travelling part. I like the position I am in now but I can't see me doing this forever, because I don't want to move-up.... I am currently looking to change careers to something that is more family friendly with less or no travelling. I am considering Nurse, Ultrasound Tech, or HS Science Teacher if I decide to go back to school. If I don't go back to school, I don't know what to do...it is hard to find something with a Biochemistry degree.

I'm an attorney. Now that I have my own firm, I love it. When I was working for someone else, I hated it.

I'm a librarian (it's really not as boring as it sounds.)
eta: I didn't love it, but most of the time I liked it very much.
Right now I'm not working though. I'm a stay-at-home-preggo. We just relocated and decided it wasn't worth it to get a job now before the baby comes.

Re: Careers: What do you do for a living and do you love it?
Wow, all of these sound like pretty great careers - I guess every company has its ups and downs, ya gotta take the good with the bad...Dont get me wrong, I LOVE my company and my coworkers (I work for a truck sales & service company that deals in big -rigs and macks as and executive assistant) but being that I have been an exec. assistant for the last 9 years, I am getting so bored of the monotonous grind that is my everyday. Plus I have to work 6 days a week and my Saturdays are 8am-1pm (off the books which is great but if I miss a Sat I lose a lot of money) any weeknd plans I may have.
FH I were talking last night and we came up with the idea that when we move in together (we are presently looking for a house in Nassau County) I might quit my job and start bartending a few nights a week and go to Cosmetology School 4 days a week. The program is only 10 mos long and then I would have my license. YAY. It is always something I have wanted to do being that I LOVE hair and makeup and I am actually Very good at it already...Long term, I would eventually like to open and maintain my own Salon and Day Spa...

Julie, ever consider working for suffolk county? DH has a Chemistry degree and took a civil service exam. He has a real easy job with great hours (8-4) and you can retire when you're at least 55 or 30 years of service with full pension and medical for you and DH.
Anyway, I don't know if this counts as a "living" but I'm a full-time student getting my phd in genetics. I am doing research right now but will probably end up teaching higher education when all is said and done. I love it!!

Re: Careers: What do you do for a living and do you love it?
I'm on HR Manager for a software company.
I have 10+ years of event coordinating (black tie dinners, awards, golf tournamnets). I loved it, the travel, the multi-tasking, meeting cool people. When I got married I wanted a 9-5 job, turned down an event director job at a Manhattan museum so I could leave at 5pm & work on starting a family.
I love my job now, but we have some rumblings of upheaval going on. I may find myself looking soon. It'll be tough though because now that I have a famly I really need to stick with a 9-5.

Re: Careers: What do you do for a living and do you love it?
I teach at an inner city middle school. I love the reactions I get from some people, like they're afraid for me, but apart from the occasional scuffle, it's really just like any other school, I think.
I had an out-of-classroom position for the last two years- I was the reading staff developer and I hated it. I realized that I was not meant for admin work for a lot of reasons. I got to teach one sixth grade class part time last year and in September I will teach those kids again as seventh graders. I am very excited to be going back into the classroom full time.

Re: Careers: What do you do for a living and do you love it?
By degree I am a chemical enginner, but I work PT right now for an environmental consulting firm. My FT job right now is a SAHM.
When I do go back into the work force, I am not sure I will go back into engineering, its very stressful at times. But my company is very good to me and very flexible with my hours, and it's hard to find a company so accomodating. So we'll see. I don't see myself going back FT anytime soon with 2 kids, maybe more.
