Carpeting the Nursery?
My entire house is hardwood, I'm thinking of getting a plushy carpet for the nursery .........something soft and comfy -
I have bad allergies, so of course I'm worried that I'm going to pass them on to my poor kid .........but if the carpet is new from the beginning, the room is small, and I'm a crazy clean freak - will the carpet REALLY be a problem as far as allergies go?
What do you think?

Re: Carpeting the Nursery?
I am a fan of carpeting in bedrooms/nursery. We don't wear our shoes in the bedrooms and we vacuum like crazy, plus my mom cleans our carpets frequently with her carpet cleaner...so our carpets are always fresh.
I wish I had carpeting in my son's room when he climbed out of his crib and fell down. That's another risk of not having carpeting in the bedrooms.
We don't have any allergies so I really don't know how carpeting would have an effect.

Re: Carpeting the Nursery?
allergy development has a very large environmental component....
if you do not sterilize your home with clorox products, and you toss your antimicrobial hand soaps, your baby will have a much better chance of having either no allergies at all, or much fewer allergies than you.
Allergies are thought to develop becuase a a child's immune system is not sufficiently stimulated. in other words, they need to see germs, or else they'll get allergies. so, let the toddler play in the dirt a bit
if you do that, a mere carpet will certainly not affect your child!
HTH.....
(I love the look of a nice throw rug over hardwood floors. if Scone had his own nursery, he SURELY would have a poofy white rug on top of hardwood.....)

Re: Carpeting the Nursery?
We have hardwood floors thoughout our house...... I am an asthmatic and VERY sensitive to chemical smells etc so we are not carpeting the nursery. My pulmonologist always recemended less carpet as possible because it traps dust mites. We also have 2 dogs and 2 cats and its much easier to just sweep and steam teh floors .
I am getting an large area rug with a pad underneath so I can still steam teh wood floors and have a soft spot in the room!

Hmmm, I'm asthmatic too, maybe I'll just get a big area rug........... - How do you manage all of those pets w/ your asthma? I WISH !!! I have one little Yorkie and even she gets to me when I'm having a really bad allergy/asthma day !!
And I didn't know about the antibacterial soap and clorox thing .........I thought I was doing a GOOD thing by being a clean freak !!!!

Re: Carpeting the Nursery?
I would do an area rug in a room that already has wood flooring. Pottery barn has some really nice plush ones.

Re: Carpeting the Nursery?
Our entire apt is hardwood.. we have two area rugs-- one in the LR and one in the room that will be the baby's.. We need to get a new rug because the one we have in there is not big enough to have a child sit and play on-- plus I find it sheds no matter how many times we vacuum.
I would just get a nice area rug-- especially, if you are afraid to commit because of allergies.

I"m great around my animals but any other pets and i'm horrible.... I sweep my house literally every other day and steam the wood floors once a week. The dogs also get a bath every 3 weeks to keep dander down....... THe asthma seems to be fine this way!
If you are an asthmatic I would really recomend no carpeting. THe fumes from the new carpet make my asthma SOOOooooo bad....I've been hopitalized before from staying over a friends wiht new carpeting.
Just get a nice area rug with a pad....much easier to clean!
As for cleaning supplies....Target has a brand of all natural cleaners that use citrus oils etc to cleam. Much friendlier for the enviroment and asthmatics........And doesn't have the anti-bacterial stufff in it!

Re: Carpeting the Nursery?
We opted to not put carpeting on the nursery floor for the exact reasons you stated. DH has very bad allergies and they could be passed on to DS. With this child, we'll do the same thing. We did however put 2 area rugs in the room which get washed weekly.

Same here but I don't have allergies either.
