Carry On Luggage and liquids- x-post from Travel

I am going to Vegas next week and I am planning on only taking carry on luggage. So my question is:

Are the requiremens (3oz) being stricly enforced.

Since it's federal law, you have to assume they will be. The security person, and you, could potentially get in a lot of trouble if they "let it slide". I wouldn't risk it.

I just responded on Travel...

I flew in June & was the liquids were not checked. I was in compliance & never once was I asked to take the quart bag out of my luggage or did anyone inspect it. I did complain after my flight to JFK officials & the TSA bc I felt the screeners were not doing their jobs. Our screener was not even looking at the screen as the bags went through. That is a whole other story.

But with the terror stuff overseas, I would think they would be more strict about it

Yes they are being inforced. I know a few people that have traveled recently and had to throw things out because they weren't in compliance.

I wouldn't chance it.

I went to Hawaii and Reno last week and it was STRICTLY enforced... I had to sit outside of the security guard and go through all of my luggage b/c he heard that I had liquid Vaseline chap stick and rewetting drops in my bag, but I couldn't find them... It was horrible b/c it took FOREVER. Make sure you go prepared to avoid all of the drama

The laws are strictly enforced everywhere. You have to hand them your ziploc of liquids so they can scan it. Every airport I have been to has strictly enforced this.

I believe so. I have flown a few times in the past couple of months and it was stricktly enforced. I saw lots of people losing new bottles of perfume, expensive moisturizers, shampoo, etc. On one trip I had thrown a bottle of lotion in my carry-on (a small sample from the hotel) and I was stopped because it wasn't in a clear ziploc bag, even though it was under 3oz. I didn't care and just had them throw it out (I had forgotten about it anyway). But I was really surprised they stopped me for it. My godmother had to throw away an expensive eye cream & moisturizer on her way to AZ.

eta for spelling

Yes, they are being inforced. I totally forgot I had a little bottle (and I mean little) of purel in my bag and they took it.

I went out to CVS and purchased this little travel kit. It comes with 3 bottles that you can fill up with whatever you want (I bought 2 kits (6 bottles) to fill up with shampoo/conditioner/astringent/make-up remover/lotion/hair shine treatment) and then I just put it in the quart sized bag and I was ok.

I just check everything now. I just take my bag and make sure all liquids are out of it. Also remember, tweezers and sissors will be confiscated and thrown out too.

I feel like it depends on the person who is checking. Last week at JFK all liquids had to be in a clear zip lock bag. Coming home we had to dump it. We could not get on the plane with any liquids.

This is why I now think it's a good idea to print the actual TSA rules. Too many inspectors are making up their own rules. There are strict rules as to what is and isn't allowed, and there really shouldn't be much arguments about it. If you bring the printout, there shouldn't be a reason for being denied whatever you bring that the TSA allows.
