Carters Refund - Social Security Number?
I recently sent off my items for the Carters 2007 Tag rash recall/refund. one of the questions on the form they sent was asking for my social security number - i left it blank as i didn't really get why they would want my SSN? the question had in small writing something about 1099 filling purposes.
Did any of you who got the refund send your SSN? why would they want the number as this isn't income it's a refund? Am i being silly and should i just send the number? i'm just not very comfortable giving my number out like that.

I never had to give my SS#, nor fill anything out. Everything was done by phone.

How so? A refund is just that, a refund. You paid for something and you are now sending the item back and getting your money back. There is no income there.

thanks for the replies. so i called them and they said that it's due to the large amount of items i sent (over 50). the lady on the phone said that it's for accounting purposes so that if they get audited they can prove they sent the check to a real person. She was a very nice lady but didn't seem to be straight on her story - one minute it she said it wouldn't affect my income, next minute she said...well you're more than likely getting more $ than what you paid....then it was over $100 value needed the SSN and then when i said i knew people who had at least 35 items and didn't have to give the SSN she said it was over 40 items...very convenient. like i said, nice lady but not very sure of what she was on about.
My other options were that she'd return the stuff or i could have a gift card for the store.
not sure what to do now.

I DID EVERYTHING OVER THE PHONE - SENT BACK 46 ITEMS AND AM GETTING BACK A LITTLE OVER $200 - HAVE NOT AND WILL NOT PROVIDE MY SS #.....

I got back $640 and they never asked for my SS#.
However, I do know that a company is required to send a 1099 for all payment made to any individual (not corporation) for tax purposes. Their accounting department is probably just cracking down on it. No harm really. I wouldn't bother claiming it on your taxes because it was a refund .
