DC's social security number

My MIL wants to get DD a bod for Christmas. She asked me about it at Thanksgiving and I told her that it is okay but that they don't mature for about 20 years or more so...??? Well, she obviously decided that my subtle hint was not enough to discourage the bond because she called about 2 weeks ago asking for DD's SS number. I told DH to tell her that I wasn't sure where it was. Now she is calling again asking for it.

She bought her a bond for her baptism so she knows that you can give the buyer's number to buy the bond. I really don't want to give out DD's SS number. I don't even know what my concern is -- I just know that I feel uncomfortable giving it to her. I told DH to call her back today and give her his number (he doesn't even have to tell her it is his -- just give her the friggin' number).

So, what do you think? Should I just give DD's number and forget about it? "Secretly" give DH's number? Tell her she's not getting any SS numbers from this household and that she can use her own to buy the bond?

My aughter has a lot of the bonds and I personally welcome them for her. When people asked I just told them they can put it in their SS# and don't need DD's. I only gave it to my sister.

I gave my IL's Damien's and Jaidyn's, they got them bonds and opened up bank accounts for them. Do you really think your IL's would do something with the #?

Why don't you set up an educationa account for DC, so the next time she mentions it, tell her, well, we just set up a 529 account for her college savings, and we'd prefer gifts to go into the account? That's how we're handling it.

that's exactly how I am doing it, it's also easier to keep track of, i tend to lose things so bond slips don't work well for me

No, I don't think they would do anything with the #, I guess I'm just funny about giving it out.

I gave my IL's both of my kid's social security numbers. I didn't hesitate to give my ILs them, but then again there they have perfect credit. I know they're not going to apply for credit in their names.

This is a great idea - also she would get a tax deduction.

Re: DC's social security number

My sons have TONS of bonds...they will appreciate it when they go to college...(so will I Chat Icon ). Only my parents have my sons' ss#. All the other bonds are in the buyers' #.

But really, I don't think your IL's will use the # for identity theft! Chat Icon Just give it to her...you'll appreciate those bonds one day!

I've given both my kids SS#'s to my family and IL's that wanted to get them bonds. I did tell them they could put their own number on it as well, but in the end, when they asked, we gave.

Re: DC's social security number

My mom and my ILs have their SSN's. I know they don't keep them anywhere (other than on the recepit for the bond cause they keep asking me for their #'s. If you can't trust your parents, who can you trust?

I'd give it to my parents and ILs. My MIL asked for Nate's SSN to set up a college account for him.
