Cash for Clunkers is over as of midnight tonight...
AP sources: Government to suspend 'cash for clunkers' program out of funding concerns
On Thursday July 30, 2009, 8:33 pm EDT WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government plans to suspend its popular "cash for clunkers" program amid concerns it could quickly use up the $1 billion in rebates for new car purchases, congressional officials said Thursday.
The Transportation Department called lawmakers' offices to alert them to the decision to suspend the program at midnight Thursday. The program offers owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.
The congressional officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Rae Tyson, a spokesman for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which administers the program, declined comment.
Congress last month approved the Car Allowance Rebate System program, known as CARS, to boost auto sales and remove some inefficient cars and trucks from the roads. The program kicked off last Friday and was heavily publicized by car companies and auto dealers.
Through late Wednesday, 22,782 vehicles had been purchased through the program and nearly $96 million had been spent. But dealers raised concerns about large backlogs in the processing of the deals in the government system, prompting the suspension.
A survey of 2,000 dealers by the National Automobile Dealers Association found about 25,000 deals had not yet approved by NHTSA, or nearly 13 trades per store. It raised concerns that with about 23,000 dealers taking part in the program, auto dealers may already have surpassed the 250,000 vehicle sales funded by the $1 billion program.
"There's a significant backlog of 'cash for clunkers' deals that make us question how much funding is still available in the program," said Bailey Wood, a spokesman for the dealers association.
Even before the suspension, some in Congress were seeking more money for the auto sales stimulus. Rep. Candice Miller, R-Mich., wrote in a letter to House leaders on Wednesday requesting additional funding for the program.
"This is simply the most stimulative $1 billion the federal government has spent during the entire economic downturn," Miller said Thursday. "The federal government must come up with more money, immediately, to keep this program going."
Brendan Daly, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said they would work with "the congressional sponsors and the administration to quickly review the results of the initiative."
General Motors Co. spokesman Greg Martin said Thursday the automaker hopes "there's a will and way to keep the CARS program going a little bit longer."

Makes you wonder how many people put deposits down on cars with the intent of finalizing the deal over the weekend.
There are going to be a lot of broken contracts.

I heard on the news this morning that the White House is somehow going to find the money to honor all of these contracts. I don't know how...

When is the last time you heard of a program ending because it was TOO popular?
I guess they know now that if you give people a cash incentive, they're going to take you up on it.
Kind of gives me hope that the old gas guzzlers will be off the road and the auto industry will be bolstered. I hope they find a way to continue it in some form, without bankrupting the gov't!!

We are only talking about 250,000 cars, i don't thnk that is a lot of inventory to help the industry as the dealers have had serveral months of inventory building up on their lots.

Do you realize that they own more than 60% of GM. If they can’t manage a program like this, can you see them running the largest American car company? And better yet, I can’t wait until they’re in charge of my healthcare. Bring on the witch doctors and send my paycheck to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave!!!

i am not 100% positive but I think this program was open to all car manufacturers. Personally i think the program should of only been on American made cars. This way people will be american made and american car makers will be forced to up their efforts on more flex fuel, efficient cars.
Still waiting for hydrogen cars on the market!

Re: Cash for Clunkers is over as of midnight tonight...
ITS NOT OVER:
White House Bulletin:
Cash for Clunkers Will Continue to Run Thru This Weekend White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs announced that the Cash for Clunkers program will continue to operate all weekend, despite reports that NHTSA would shut down the program last night at midnight due to the fact the $1 billion fund had already been exhausted.
"If you were planning on going to buy a car this weekend, using this program, this program continues to run," Gibbs told reporters.
"Based on the enormous response from consumers, Cash for Clunkers has been an enormous success," said GNYADA President Mark Schienberg. "However, the conflicting media reports have created confusion among consumers and dealers."
"Due to the strong interest in the program, we hope the federal government will appropriate additional money to extend the program beyond this weekend. We spoke with Senator Schumer's staff last night and encouraged them to approve more funding for this program."
Keep Making Deals Based on this morning's announcement from the White House, GNYADA encourages dealers to keep selling vehicles and applying for the Clunkers rebate. If you have difficulty getting onto the CARS.gov website, try it during off-peak hours (from midnight to 5 AM) when fewer dealers are trying to access the system.
As of this morning, the government was reassuring dealers and consumers that any deals submitted before the program is formally suspended would go through.
Wire reports also indicated that the program's overwhelming success has prompted many legislators to call for additional funding so that even more consumers could purchase new vehicles. The Senate and House could vote on the issue as early as today.
GNYADA is monitoring the situation and is in contact with NHTSA and NADA, and will update members throughout the day as the situation progresses.

Define American made cars.
The Ford unit made in Mexico or the VW made in Tenn?
And if we instituted such a policy would you be ok with the EU and Asia enacting a similar policy?

i dont like getting into arguements like this. my comment was not intended to offend it was just a statement but i should have added that we would be helping to support America by pruchasing american made cars, rather than helping to support foreign countries esp in this recession. i appoligize to the OP because im sure her intent was not to start a conflict

this happened to my in-laws. they are pizzzzzzzzzzed. i think there should have been a way to grandfather people in somehow. they were to pick up their new car today and got a phone call from the dealer this morning saying they would now need to bring an extra 2k. my MIL was a big obama fan... but she is NOT a happy camper right now.
