Cash "Prizes" at Birthday Parties: Is this the NORM??

I was talking to my sister the other day and she was telling me about a birthday party my niece went to where after winning a game that was played instead of winning regular prizes like, say, lip gloss or nail polish (the girls are 9 turning 10) the kid's mother gave them cash. Five bucks each for every win.

My niece went home with $20! Chat Icon

This seemed so bizarre to both of us but I was wondering if that's the norm down here. FTR, my sister lives up in CT but for the most part, things seem relatively the same, so we were both thrown for a loop with this one!

Has anyone else experienced this?

That was my first thought too. In the craziness of party planning maybe mom forgot to get prizes?

I think handing out money at a birthday party is very odd. I would not like it if my kid came home with money unless it was some sort of casino themed party.

We've been to parties with extravagant favors that have really impressed me. I would not be impressed with a cash prize/favor.

Weird, but I wouldn't complain if my child came home with money instead of a plastic bag full of junky toys Chat Icon Filling up the pinatas with dollar bills instead of candy seems genius to me Chat Icon

I was thinking the same.

Hey id rather my kid come home with $$ rather than come home with a bag filled with candy or other junk food.
